EDITORIAL By Agim BAÇI But who thinks about our police officers...?! Albanian police yesterday mobilized an entire region of their country to find as quickly as possible the killers of a Greek police officer, who was killed two days earlier, about 40 kilometers inside Greek territory, by some Albanians suspected of being traffickers. All this speed and attention is to be applauded, since a mother’s son has lost his life in the neighboring country. But after yesterday’s haste over the Greek police officer, don’t the mothers of those police officers have the right to ask why our own police officers are treated as though nothing has happened? A police officer was killed in Greek territory, in the neighboring country. A human life is never insignificant, and whoever takes it deserves to be punished. But within its own territory, the Albanian state has had 196 police officers killed in just the last three years, while no more than 19 people have been sentenced to capital punishment—life imprisonment—in prison. At the same time, the Albanian state still has no law guaranteeing— To mobilize an entire region to find the killer of a foreign police officer, when you did so little about the killing of your own police officers that it cannot be recorded in any statistics, not even propaganda ones, means acting like a state only “when they make you,” or when interests are at stake. Finding the killer of the Greek police officer is a sign that the state can pursue and catch a criminal. It is a signal that it can change...but only when its “protectors” demand it. But after yesterday’s haste over the Greek police officer, do not the mothers of those Albanian police officers, whose sons have been killed and massacred over these years, have the right to demand from the Albanian state the same seriousness and commitment in punishing the criminals who kill and [pres-] over the last three years, 196 police officers have been killed, capital punishment, life imprisonment, in no law guaranteeing and protecting the police. The latter means that a police officer is free to shoot at a pedestrian only if he is shot at—that is, only if they kill him (!!!). To rush to raise the issue “when they round them up,” can pursue and catch the criminal. It is a signal that it can change... but only when its... protectors ask it to. Hundreds of mothers have the right to suspect that this state is not serious about those who are raised to protect it, while hundreds of thousands of Albanians have the right to believe that this state is servile. 40 Albanians suspected of murder handcuffed The situation is chaotic at the Kapshticë border crossing. The murder of the Greek border police officer on Wednesday in Greek territory has caused a stream of migrants, including some with valid documents, to head for the Albanian border crossing, while Albanian police have launched an operation to find the killer of the Greek police officer. The situation was most difficult during the previous night, when nearly all the Albanian police forces of Korçë Prefecture had deployed at the Kapshticë border crossing. Over the past 24 hours, around 40 people suspected of murdering the Greek police officer the previous day on Greek soil have been taken to the Devoll Police Station. Page 6

The sensational news of the arrest of a person highly wanted for committing numerous crimes in Albania, and who had been charged by the Albanian judiciary, was confirmed by sources within UNMIK forces in Kosovo, while the Albanian Prosecutor’s Office does not acknowledge the news. Critics have described the arrest as a show, while the Ministry of Public Order does not share that view.
