Monitoring, help for the Opposition
EDITORIAL
The closer election day for local government gets, the more questions arise about whether these elections will be free. No, this concern is not only that of the opposition. Thus the indignation also comes from the international community. The president of that opposition, which cared more about taking power than about defending national interests, is saying that the conditions he set for the elections are not being respected. This is not only a problem for us Albanians but also for foreigners. If those who sought the legalization of the government that brought down the state in 1997 and are applying the worst standards for running the country consider Albania a country that should be monitored by the international community, that means that after 3 years all their propaganda about claims that the country has achieved stability has failed. Or, in the most extreme case, if attention is given to their monitoring, then it should be understood that the situation in Albania is very serious. So in any case Albanians must draw the conclusion that the presence of foreigners is essential. With care in publishing assessments about the distorted fate of the elections, and also in signing declarations of the CEC type, with care regarding violations of the law, and on the other hand: administrative pressure, police interference, the machinery of the state against the government’s opponents, the running of election commissions in open violation of the rules. After this, or even considering the responsibilities that the international community has in relation to the despotism of these last three years, they are such that the arrival of a 50-year-old monitoring group to tell Albanians that the elections will be trusted is not only unnecessary but also the making of a fraud. If that monitoring group truly is such, it must prove that the elections are not only impartially clear but also that any police interference has stopped. The public has the right to demand this insistently. We cannot accept that, in the name of monitoring, all violations and manipulations are covered up. By these standards, monitoring is only a means to justify elections and not to make them honest. This is precisely what should be Albanians’ first fear and not an interest in learning what some international figure says on television.
