Italy... close and far away
This early-summer Italy, and the beach halls, have drawn hundreds and thousands of Albanians every day. So many that now no longer dare to take a ferry seat, even though they have been loyal to their crossings over the sea. This is because the reactions of the neighboring state, whether here in their own country or on our shores, have hardened. Even the voices of senior officials there seem to be warning of a tougher stance, but it seems that the Albanian government has formed a kind of alliance with people smugglers (it does not matter whether they are camouflaged in police uniforms or not), and for this reason the neighboring state has begun to ignore the ridiculous explanations of our officials. And how could it be otherwise, when at the start of a day, in the morning, there is a speedboat seized by our country’s police, with the blockade of the holidays (which in fact others pay for us) and during the day it turns into a spectacle and a seaside commotion, when a few hours later and still during the day, another speedboat is caught by Prime Minister Meta, while government spokespeople begin trying to find the way to whitewash him. And equally surprising is this selective approach of the prime ministerial conscience.
Prime Minister Fatos Nano, apparently, has been set in motion not by seeing how much his country creates more scandal toward Italy, how much debate it stirs by pushing things to extremes and then turning back. That is what has happened with the promise to re-punish officials within only a few days. How so? Honest Albanians know what justice means. They know what the state means. At the very least, they have learned by observing the neighboring state. That is why they place their hopes in this state. Which has promised to give them care if, with Albanian papers, it is difficult for them to live. Naturally, this diplomatic and presentable stance does not convey a climate of security for our neighbors either. On the contrary, it becomes clearer in the way proper states act, but also in how scandals are closed in silence or not. For it becomes all too clear in the contrast between officials who are punished for mistakes and officials who behave as untouchable in the country where they come and go in the name of politics. Because here, it emerged only after Agim Shehu resigned as Minister of Public Order, while the government was moving and the scandal was erupting in two ministries, that Meta again seeks to give himself time. To close the scandal in time, but not to enforce the law. And in this way, to remain just as far from and close to Italy.
