EDITORIAL By Agim BAÇI Albanians rushed to present the Europeans with a dossier of Berisha’s actions, accusing the Democratic leader of being behind the destabilization of Albania. The Albanian Government’s report on this event was so quick and so clear that the Government seemed like one of the many international organizations monitoring the situation in Albania. Other dossiers, drawn up by the authorities against the opposition in general, have also gone straight to the chanceries, with a red card on the road to Europe. Thus, for three years, the Government has seemed satisfied when it lays the blame on the opposition, and distressed when, because of these “faults,” Albanians are continually left without the chance to live as true Europeans. This story continues to be part of our bad fortune simply because of one small mistake: government officials forget that when they speak to European institutions, they are not presenting a dossier of the opposition’s actions, but of their own government’s. ...there is no way to set the situation right when the prime minister answers with the anti-political word “never” when dialogue is at issue. ...The political situation can never belong to just one side. Even less so to the opposition. If the Government cannot keep the situation under control and sit down for dialogue with its political opponents, if the Government continues to call the other part of Albanian politics an enemy when it goes to speak before the international community, then the latter is right not to hold back the slaps it delivers whenever we remind it of our wish to join Europe. The crisis among the parties in this coalition, connected with the violent events of recent days in Bashkudhura [?], has become apparent.
