According to sources at the Tirana Municipality, a breakdown at one of the pumping stations on the outskirts has caused the water flow to the wells to decrease. Specialists have contacted a Slovenian company, and the necessary spare parts are expected to arrive soon. Tirana, with more than 250,000 residents—a population that reaches 350,000 when the commuters from the outskirts are included—has felt the drinking-water problem keenly. In summer, the city’s water supply drops to as little as 1,300 liters per second, an amount insufficient to meet Tirana’s ever-growing demand. New buildings, cafés and restaurants, and the population’s greater needs in recent times are among the factors that have made a solution to the problem more urgent. During the two months that followed, extensive work was carried out to expand and reconstruct Tirana’s water-supply network. Around 70 million lekë were allocated. Seven private companies undertook work across the capital. It seemed that some progress had been made, but apparently the problem will be fully resolved only when work is completed on the Bovilla reservoir and the Bovilla–Tirana pipeline. Work on these projects is due to begin in the autumn.
