Alia: “The final mysteries”
Mehmet Shehu, the stolen weapon, the secret files...
CARLO BOLLINO
TIRANA - For the first time for the Albanian newspaper, Ramiz Alia recounts the last two years of his rule, the fall of the communist regime, the talks with the Americans and the Italians, his relations with Mehmet Shehu, as well as many other events left in the shadows.
I found Enver’s deputy at his home in Tirana, where he has been living under house arrest for months and where he is awaiting trial. This is because he has been accused by the Albanian justice system of genocide. In fact, I found him calm, like a man in trouble. He was pleased to give this account, in which he perhaps hopes to leave his own version of the final events of the communist regime. As often happens with the testimony of protagonists, his account is full of justifications, omissions and many personal versions of Albania’s history. I had written him a letter explaining that I valued his testimony highly, although I was not convinced that it would help clarify many facts. But he insisted on speaking.
The subject was the file across from one another, which will be published every Saturday from now on. There will be many controversies, but I am convinced that the Albanian public has the right to know his side too.
In the first interview, Alia recounts the final episode of Mehmet Shehu, the way he learned of his suicide, as well as the issue of the weapon that later disappeared from the file. He then speaks about relations with the Italians and the Americans, about the secret talks of the last years of the regime, and about many other behind-the-scenes matters.
DURRES - There are rumors that the weapon that killed Mehmet Shehu was never found. And indeed, nobody has been able to give a clear answer to this issue. Alia says he saw the weapon, but then it disappeared from the file. He recalls that, according to what he was told, the pistol was a “Beretta,” caliber 7.65. This weapon, he says, was not preserved as material evidence. This is one of the mysteries that continue to remain.
In the conversation, Alia also mentions meetings with American and Italian representatives in the final years of the dictatorship, when the regime was trying to find an escape route. He recalls that the contacts were kept discreetly and that many of them were never made public.
At the end of the account, Alia lets it be understood that at the trial he will tell everything. This statement is what opens the new series of his testimonies.
