A 9-year-old child is killed

Investigators suspect. A criminal case is opened immediately A 9-year-old child is killed The shepherd boy’s death remains a mystery The boy had been found dead near a military unit TIRANE — The death of a little shepherd remains a mystery. Last Saturday — around 10 in the morning — 9-year-old Fatmir Nura from the village of Yzberisht in Tirane was found killed near his livestock. At first, the fatal signs — a serious head wound and a fractured skull — were taken to be the result of being struck with stones. But the initial investigations, carried out after the body was found, raised further suspicions. Investigators believe the child may have been hit with a detonator cap, which caused his immediate death. The boy had been found lying near a military unit, a fact that further increased the suspicions. The prosecutor’s office immediately opened a criminal case for murder, while the forensic examination is expected to determine the exact mechanism of death. According to the initial information, the child had gone out as usual with the livestock. When he did not return, family members began searching and later found him dead. Investigators and police went to the scene and questioned several residents. So far, no line of inquiry has been ruled out. The case has shaken local residents, while investigators are also examining the possibility of revenge or a conflict within the clan. (Bd.La.) Blood feud within the clan

Cholera, the alarm eases

A significant drop in cases in the past two weeks Cholera, the alarm eases Specialists sound optimistic Peace has finally returned to hospitals thanks to the hygiene measures taken by the institutes TIRANE — In the last two weeks, cholera in our country seems to be receding, leaving panic and a state of alarm behind. Specialists from the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology are optimistic about overcoming the disease. After the diagnostic tests carried out in these days as well, the specialist doctors say that no new cases have appeared in the past week. Meanwhile, the situation in the infectious disease hospitals has normalized. The Ministry of Health will continue to closely monitor the situation. Sources from this ministry say that disinfection measures and drinking-water control will continue. Special attention is being paid to the areas where the first cases appeared. According to the specialists, the situation in the infectious wards has improved markedly. Doctors say that public awareness and the observance of hygiene rules have produced results. However, they ask that vigilance not be lowered and that the advice of the health authorities be respected. In the latest analyses no new cases have been detected. This has also brought calm to family members and medical staff. Experts stress that the disease could return if hygiene conditions and food controls are not respected. Arm and Mero[?]

Gardens turned into private cemeteries

Former owners Gardens turned into private cemeteries KAVAJE — They could no longer find a place for their dead infant and were forced to bury it in the garden. The road leading to the village cemetery of Karpen had been blocked. In fact, for a long time it could no longer be called a village road, but a piece of land enclosed by a fence. A fellow villager of the infant’s father now claims that the road was his property, and as such, they cannot cross it, not even the dead. The daily correspondents[?] want to find another road. This story took place a few days ago in the village of Karpen in Kavaje. The dead infant, now resting in the garden of villager D.I., lived only a few days. As usual, the family and other villagers wanted to organize the ceremony according to local customs. Everything went well — if that term can be used in a death — until they reached the road enclosed by a fence. Thus, questions of property have now reached even the graves of the new and the afterlife. The infant’s case is apparently not the only one. Some time ago, the body of an elderly man likewise could not be laid to rest in the village graves in a remote area of Kavaje. Strange as it may seem, the reason was a fence with the same owner, which prevented the burial. Even in that case, the family members had finally managed to take the deceased to the cemetery. Now in these villages people are wondering: “How will it be for the dead?” The elderly count the days and from now on begin to express their wishes about the place of final rest. Many of them have already started making plans in relation to the comparisons with their fellow villagers for new revenge[?]. These afflicted people live only a little longer, but at least after death they no longer knock on our door.

An American pro-Greek in Albania

He is “non grata” TIRANE — One of the most powerful figures in the Greek lobby in the USA will visit Albania. Nicolas Gage, a writer and journalist known for his links to politics and American circles, is one of the greatest propagandists of Greek ideas in America, at least as he is known in Tirane. On 11 June[?] he was on a list of “non grata” persons of the Foreign Ministry. His attempt to visit the country has met with a harsh reaction, while various circles mention that he has openly criticized the Albanian positions on the minority issue. However, despite his long-standing propaganda in favor of Greek theses, the Albanian authorities have not closed the doors of entry to Albania for Gage. Here he will have the opportunity to judge for himself on the basis of the personal contacts he will have.

Five servicemen go home

The trial over the Peshkëpi massacre is closed Five servicemen go home The sentence equals the time spent in pretrial detention Had helped the killer of the Greek TIRANE — The five servicemen accused of responsibility in the Peshkëpi massacre, when on 10 April '94 a Greek command had attacked a center for Albanian recruits, are going home. Although found guilty by the Military Court of Tirane — and sentenced to between 6 and 8 months in prison — the servicemen Mersa, Storka, Ndini, Guma and Selo will return to their homes within this week. For them, pretrial detention has been enough, since the sentence imposed has been served by the time already spent in detention. The court’s decision has been widely commented on. It was said of the five servicemen that they had helped the perpetrator of the killing of the Greek soldier by not reporting the incident in time. The trial panel accepted that the circumstances and the length of their detention justified sending them home. (pro.)

A woman is sentenced to 7 years in prison

TIRANE — “Jorgjica Morina is not the ‘murderess woman’ of the Greek tragic figure Qirjakos Dhodhis.” This is how Jorgjica’s lawyers expressed themselves and defended her during the court proceedings. Nevertheless, the court found her guilty of “intentional killing with the purpose of cooperation” in the incident that ended with the death of the Greek citizen. The woman was sentenced to 7 years in prison, and the time spent in pretrial detention was also taken into account. At the hearing it was said that Jorgjica Morina had helped after the crime had been committed and had hidden traces and objects. The trial panel imposed less than the minimum provided for by law, taking into account the circumstances and her secondary role in the incident. (pro.)

The man from Durres is released: he was arrested by mistake

A serious bureaucratic mix-up DURRES — After only 24 hours, the resident of Durres, Sadmir Haxhia, 30, arrested by the Italian financial police on charges of murder, has been released. His arrest was in fact linked to a similar name sought by the Italian authorities. After checks on the documents and identity, it was proven to be a bureaucratic mistake. But Sadmir Haxhia had spent the night in a cell and was then brought before the Italian police for further clarification. Local media have described the case as an example of the serious consequences that administrative negligence can cause. Sadmir Haxhia

Joy in the hospital of death

COURAGE OF REALITY Joy in the hospital of death ELBASAN — A baby arrives in the hospital of death. A woman, hospitalized in this disinfected ward of the Elbasan hospital, where a few weeks earlier 11 sick people died because of cholera, has given birth to a girl. When her friends came to give congratulations to the new mother, she was there, because she herself was being treated for cholera. In a hospital where death seemed to take everything, a life was born. The event, says the newspaper, Toma with mother and baby, were brought from Gorrica to the ward after labor began and she did not give birth in the gynecology ward. The hospital doctors, who had all the Albanian and Greek medicines, helped ensure that the delivery was carried out without complications. The child and the mother are out of danger. Even in a hospital marked by wounds and sad memories, life has found a place to enter. This is the best news of the day for Elbasan. (m.k.)
