Risk from drinking water
The threat of pollution returns
TIRANE — Once again, the pollution of drinking water in Tirana is becoming a problem. Only in recent months have large areas been identified where sewer channels have been found to interfere with the water-supply network. In the last two months, 50 breaks in the distribution pipeline network and citizens’ complaints about water quality have shown that the consequences are increasing. Thus the anxiety of the capital’s residents about their taps, in almost all 10 inhabited municipalities of the capital, is compounded by fear of infections.
Numerous problems have arisen this year in several large areas of the city — Ali Demi street, Qylik Kuqa, Qemal Stafa and Dibrës street — which have been seriously affected by water pollution. Instead of the little water they expected, residents have repeatedly found the most varied filth as a result of sewer channels bursting into the water-supply network. The situation has been especially severe on Ali Demi street where even today — after 6 months — the taps in citizens’ homes continue to produce waste. Meanwhile, more than 20 other cases of pollution have been verified in more limited areas. “The Water Supply Enterprise also has something to do with this case,” accuses Vili Sinjari, head of sector at the Tirana Hygiene Directorate, “repairs of faults are carried out with great delays. This also happens because of the lack of machinery and necessary equipment.” Nevertheless, the regular malfunctioning of municipal services has worsened the situation. According to Sinjari, for 3 years the cleaning of street drains has not been carried out, which has led to a rise in the level of intersections and, in intervention areas at intersections, has favored contamination of the water.
It is precisely the existence of an overly neglected drainage network that is the main cause of the phenomenon, which is causing growing concern and is quite serious. 95 percent of the pollution has been recorded at points where the water-supply network supplying the capital in recent years has been compromised. Over the last 6 months, losses in the network amount to almost 40 percent — out of 1,700 liters per second, 700 liters are wasted — and the basin is being affected. Only 40 percent reaches the population; around 60 percent is lost. The waters of Tirana today.
Further information also comes from points below the New City. On Kavajës street, more specifically — explains Sinjari — complaints are also made from 13:00 to 18:00, when the city’s water supply. As soon as pollution is verified, in the main neighborhood and surrounding areas the supply is interrupted while the source is sought until the situation is fixed, and an effort is made to speed up the response with clean water by tanker truck. Electric bed for suicide
DURRES — A man later died in a bed connected to an iron fence, by a 50-year-old man from the center M. Pashaj, who worked as a guard in a seaside neighborhood. Beside him, the suicide victim had a stick belonging to relatives. The victim was found. It was not known whether it was intentional or accidental. Medical examinations show that death was caused by the body and legs being asphyxiated by the current from the fence. The story becomes even stranger, since the bed lacked a burial place and the body had on its head [?] like Pashaj.
If the version “Pashaj — guard” is correct, at the time he lived with his family (wife and two children) in Creti — temporarily connected to electricity in Durrës to close the quiet ownership of his house. After this event, the couple reportedly became interested in getting an electricity line and connecting the property which they had used for this purpose. And while the authorities of Roshnik have the Directorate of Museums of Berat and a proposal, the locals have been informed. The latter are accused by the former of having unlawfully occupied the museum building after having been compensated for its value.

While running after his toys, he came upon the unconscious body of Bujar Rustem Mahmutaj at the beginning of the Fier–Ballsh road. Nursing home brawl among the elderly
CURSIVE REALITY
FIER — Violence has found a place even in the nursing home. Yesterday, a 70-year-old “resident” of the Fier nursing home was arrested precisely for an act of violence. This story reminds us of the plots of some foreign films. Misery, old people worn out by a long and difficult life, and the extreme absurdity of the conditions, encourage such actions. In the scuffle, another of his contemporaries and also this resident were involved. Official sources have reported an altercation, with sticks and syringes — and of a natur[?]

DURRES — A study on the construction of a tourist complex in Gjiri i Lalzit in the district of Durrës is nearing completion. This coastal area — where the beauty of the sandy beach blends with that of the surrounding hills — has been the subject of a design study for almost a year by an Italian firm and an English one.
On an area of 1,200 hectares, the project foresees the construction of 3 tourist villages, 2 large hotels, a pier where around 400 speedboats will dock, as well as sports facilities up to golf and tennis. The implementation of this project, in addition to its genuine tourist value, will contribute to the development of the municipalities of Sukth and Shijak, which are expected to be the main suppliers of labor and agricultural and livestock products for this new pearl.
