“Kakavija no stop”
After the Albanian government's decision, the Gjirokastër border crossing also begins operating on a 24-hour basis
TIRANA — “Kakavija no stop.” Now — when in the Albanian capital fifty owners of minipirate vehicles against five — the border post of “Omonia” has once again strangely returned to the centre of attention for Tirana and Athens. However, the latest headline “Kakavija no stop” this time does not refer to the threats from the highest Greek authorities to repatriate Albanian refugees en masse, but comes as a decision by the Albanian government to put all border crossing points with the neighbouring country on a 24-hour regime. Precisely in these days of mounting tension between Albania and Greece, Tirana — through Kakavija — is sending the first positive signal, opening its border with Greece for more hours of the day as well.
Thus when “Kakavija no stop” is understood only as a title of Greek “revenge”, it suddenly turns into an expression of goodwill. As confirmed from Gjirokastër, the Kakavija border crossing point — after the Albanian government's decision and the necessary funding — has completed all preparations and has just begun operating on a 24-hour basis. To support this, the Albanian customs authorities have also assigned 8 new employees, who together with the other functional changes make possible a longer “union” between Albania and Greece. However, on the other side of the border, the new influx is still the vehicles drawing in Albanian refugees, although not at the levels of the latest Greek authorities' threats. From the first day of the proceedings against the Omonia sports supporters until Friday, the number of refugees returned from Greece through this border point was about 350 per day, slightly above the normal average of around 250 per day.
Meanwhile, the proceedings against the five minorities of “Omonia”, accused of espionage and illegal possession of weapons, continue normally in the Tirana court. On Friday, for the first time before the judges — after the confession of the five defendants — witnesses also appeared, initially thought to be more than 100. The latest confirmations speak of a reduction in their number, perhaps because the charges are no longer the same as before, since “high treason against the homeland” and territorial change belong only to the past.

300,000 expired preserves blocked
ELBASAN — A very large quantity of preserves has been blocked by the health authorities in Elbasan.
— A very large quantity of preserves has been blocked by the health authorities in Elbasan. 300,000 jars, all products of the city's Canning Enterprise, have been considered expired by the Sanitary Inspectorate. Now the health specialists together with those from the enterprise are working together to decide the future of hundreds of thousands of jars of jam and fruit compote that have been kept in refrigeration beyond their time.
According to the report from the official news agency, the enterprise's managers had kept this huge quantity of products in warehouses without circulation. For three years the 300,000 jars had been waiting for consumption on the market, while at the time of production they had not been considered profitable by the managers. It seems the forecast was not very accurate, because now, instead of increasing the company's profits, they risk — if the destruction of the expired jars is decided — causing it an incalculable loss.

Thirst in healthcare: hospitals without water
Four years of drought in the city polyclinic
VLORË — Complete drought has gripped healthcare in Vlorë. The taps in the city's medical centres have long been producing nothing but groans. The situation in the polyclinic is even more alarming. Here the doctors have turned the place into one where water no longer runs, and it has been dry for four years. This shortage has forced them every day to carry buckets and bottles to fill and empty the polyclinic rooms.
The situation is almost the same in the hospital and maternity ward of Vlorë. “For several months we have had a severe shortage of water supply,” the hospital ward secretary, a doctor, tells Gazeta Shqiptare. The head of the hospital says that water is lacking in many areas — not to mention the maternity ward — where the number of patients is large. And in the service rooms no improvement has been seen. The hospital, which some time ago was considered a model in this sector, is now continuing to be treated like the city's other departments. (St. Ma.)
High-voltage poles “attack” rooftops
GJIROKASTËR — The long-standing power poles in Gjirokastër have gone on the “attack” against houses.
These days, one such wooden pole fell onto the roof of a house in the Varosh neighbourhood, fortunately causing no significant damage. Meanwhile, many other poles have begun to lean, threatening the rooftops of homes very directly. In fact, in Palorto the fall of a pole caused a bad reaction. The damaged roof slid, hitting the roof of another house.
Concerned about this situation are not only the residents at risk but also the Electricity Enterprise itself. “The wooden poles have rotted and need to be replaced with new concrete ones,” specialists explain to Gazeta Shqiptare — many of them are about 60 years old.” (Ra. Ko.)

Hoxha’s children ask:
“Return our father’s belongings to us”
A Durrës villager also claims the dictator’s fake car
TIRANA — A new embarrassment, in addition to the heat, has been added these days for the employees of the International Culture Centre in Tirana. Family members of Enver Hoxha have come to this centre asking to retrieve all his personal belongings and clothes, which had previously been exhibited in his former palace and now fill the warehouses. “We want to take them because they are ours,” said the dictator's relatives, while the Museum staff, in the absence of the directors who are on leave, have shrugged their shoulders, unable to give a precise answer.
But it seems that the owners of Hoxha's belongings are not only his family members. The former Museum has also been visited by the owner of the “Fiat 500”, exhibited as the car with which “the commander used to travel when he was in legality”, although in fact Hoxha had never even seen it. The car, as has recently been discovered, belongs to a villager from Shkozet, who had hidden it for years in his barn. Now the villager, after finding it, is insisting on taking back his own car, although emptied from the inside, perhaps hoping to make some profit by selling it as an antique. (Ar. Me)

Woman reports her husband: “He beat me”
Durrës, police intervene
DURRËS — “He beat me, hitting me wherever he could.”
Woman reports her husband:
“He beat me”
DURRËS — “He beat me, hitting me wherever he could. I can't go on like this anymore. Help me.” These words from the tearful woman were enough for law enforcement officers to stop her husband R.A., 39, from the city of Durrës a few days ago.
“I wasn't going to come. But I did not consider it reasonable that a person who has shown feelings of being offended, whose conflicts with her husband have led her to turn to the police. Conflicts that at first the woman endured, hoping that over time everything could change and the peace of family life would become a dream to be realised. Every day that passed was different. First the arguments and quarrels, and then an even more bitter ending. The only solution left for the woman was to report it to the police. A painful solution, but still better than what she had been enduring for a long time.

The storm “floods” the airport
TIRANA — The heavy rain that fell over almost the entire Albanian territory on Saturday night did not bring only pleasure.
Among other things, holes formed in the ground, causing some minor difficulties, but it seems that the greatest consequences were at a much more important facility in the country: Rinas Airport. On Friday afternoon the downpour in the first hours left the airport waiting lounge without sport[?] and so on, preventing employees from checking passengers on the runway[?] of those on board. The relevant hold[?] has still taken water from above, causing slips and the blocking of work. Even in these circumstances, it seems that the force of the flooding has greatly increased the airport workers' desire to work.
YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA
PIRAN, THE CITY POLLUTED BY THE GJANICË RIVER The Gjanicë River, which runs through the city from end to end, continues to be heavily polluted. The Gjanicë, which for a certain period has been a “bin” where all the waste from the factories is dumped — the nitrogen plant, the oil plant, the nitrogen plant, the refinery — has not changed in years. With the river completely emptied, there is now no sign of its fauna. The Gjanicë still carries within itself places of death.
GJIROKASTËR, CAR ACCIDENT, AN 8-YEAR-OLD CHILD, AN 8-YEAR-OLD [?] AND PËSUTAL — A little girl called [Ana?] Sofratika from Gjirokastër has ended up in hospital. She became the victim of a car accident. The driver lost control of the car, hitting her with the front part. While the driver said he was being chased by the police and drove off in the pursuit on the road, leaving the child injured.
