Police escort for the opposition

“We will protect the Socialist Party deputies” Public order provides protection at rallies Words from the rallies SALI BERISHA, President of the Republic "Some specific individuals are telling villagers that the Constitution will take away their fields and land. But nobody will touch the land. In political struggle one must not deceive people". SERVET PËLLUMBI, deputy chairman of the Socialist Party "We and other parties are being accused of wanting to leave Albania under the Constitution. This is Albania. We are fighting for a real Constitution, not for a partisan code like the one Berisha is presenting to us". SKËNDER GJINUSHI, chairman of the Social Democratic Party "In a foreign parliament the main function, the adoption of laws, is useless if it exists at all. Berisha removed the slogan out of fear that he might not achieve consensus". RIDVAN PESHKEPIA, member of the Democratic Alliance Party "It is a project presented as an objective meant to serve one man, and we cannot recommend voting unconstitutionally for laws in favor of a single person". LEGAITIMACY MOVEMENT PARTY "In the draft, it is arbitrarily intended that the republican form of government be declared generally unchangeable. So not only from today until it is completed, but the people’s will in the future is prejudged continuously in order to realize a right that should be removed today". A Socialist rally from years ago TIRANE — The police have decided to intervene in defense of members of the Socialist Party during their travels through the districts to organize rallies on the referendum. After the numerous incidents that occurred during last week, it is now the Ministry of Order itself that has sent a representative to the PS headquarters to offer the support of this body in respecting order and ensuring the normal development of this party’s activities. They have even immediately requested the lists of Socialist Party deputies and their future movements. "It was the police themselves who asked to accompany us," Bashkim Zeneli, spokesperson for the Socialist Party, told Gazeta Shqiptare, "because protection by the Order organs is recognized by law". And this seems to have had immediate effects. During the activities carried out in the first days of this week, no further incidents were recorded. The decision of the Ministry of Order came immediately after the Socialist Party denounced acts of violence committed during rallies it held in several districts. The first incidents began in Kruja, when in the hall where the Socialist Party meeting was being organized, several people intervened with slogans against the party. Such acts then continued in Saranda, Gjirokastër — deputy Theodhor Bej was not allowed to hold a meeting — and in Kruja where, according to announcements from the Socialist Party, groups of armed bandits attacked the car of deputy Servet Pëllumbi, destroying it. The Socialist Party denounced such actions as terrorist acts, accusing the Order organs themselves and making them complicit in them. While the propaganda campaign "for" and "against" the draft constitution seems likely to proceed without conflict in this little time that remains — at least all party activities around the referendum are ending — difficulties and problems are accompanying the use of the Central Election Commission. On Tuesday the number of polling stations was finally announced — in the whole country there are 4,614 in total — while complaints and calls continue for speeding up the necessary preparations. Voter lists By Tuesday evening the exact number of people who will take part in the vote had still not been announced. The Commission has again called on local centers to draw up the final voter lists and post them immediately in the town centers. Certificates To facilitate the issuing of certificates — the document necessary to vote — for people who are not placed on the list with identity cards, it has been decided that they be issued free of charge. Fraud with the inedible white cheese?

The owners say they have eliminated it, but doubts remain However, the Hygiene inspectors did not believe them and fined them 20 tons disappear from the goods meant to be buried TIRANE — The fate of a 24-ton quantity of cheese that arrived from Greece remains mysterious. Sanitary inspectors and standards inspectors classified it as unfit for human consumption. And precisely when these inspectors went to bury it, they found not a crumb of cheese. The owners told them that they had buried their own goods, something that did not convince the inspectors, since it should have been the latter who carried out the burial. The story had begun in mid-September, when a not very well-known company in Tirane had imported from Greece 24 tons of white cheese in metal barrels. But at customs, the quality of this cheese raised doubts among the inspectors of the Hygiene Directorate, who immediately sent samples to the laboratories. Their suspicions were confirmed: the cheese was found to contain microbes and was not suitable for consumption. The inspection carried out by the Standards and Quality authorities also deemed it a product unsuitable for trade. "It was a decomposed cheese that would cause harm to the throat," Gjergji Kiri, head of the Standards and Quality Control Branch for Tirana, told Gazeta Shqiptare, "and as such we decided to bury it, while also informing the Financial Police so they would be aware". But when the inspectors arrived with the decision that had been taken, they saw — and there is a report to prove it — but we did not assist in such a thing. For that very reason we also decided to fine them 100,000 lek". "It is a mystery that is still being worked on in order to be clarified. (Gj.P.)

Child prodigy: 5 years old, 200 books

Klejdia, now a member of the library Child prodigy: 5 years old, 200 books The child genius is called Klejdia Lazri TIRANE — A library in the head of a 5-year-old girl from Tirana. Her name is Klejdia Lazri and she has just passed the mark of 200 books read. For her, the primer is now an "old thick book," memorized since she was two years and three months old. "Maybe a 5-year-old?". Dori has taken this book from her. A child who uses the expression "oh, I have arrived!" appropriately and precisely, one that each child used only a tiny bit — I want a chocolate. For Klejdia, today will be a very special day, because the managers of the National Library in the capital have decided by a formal note to make her the youngest member of their institution. Moved together with her parents from Shkodra — where she had also left the city library, with which she had been registered since 20 May '94 — and after having "eaten" the entire family library, Klejdia is now asking her parents for books fresh off the press. A request that is entirely fair and desirable, not because of the price of books but, unfortunately, because of the pace at which she finishes them. "She is a special child," her teacher at Kindergarten 45 in Tirane, Bukurie Çeliku, tells Gazeta Shqiptare. "While her peers play with dolls and little houses, Klejdia reads the books that she takes from home every day." On Tuesday, in blankets at kindergarten, the 5-year-old opened "Mësime llaç bisha?" and has read the sentence opposite, which Klejdia says she left on page 12. She took the book and went through it easily — after the primer she learned with it, she at 10 years old? Klejdia — it was "Arabian Tales," a tale by Shel Silverstein. And since that first try she had reached the top of this book, Klejdia had read 103 books, so many that her mother can no longer note them all down. "I want to become a doctor," says Klejdia eagerly, this time without referring to the reason she reads, "because I don’t want people to remain sick, I can’t just leave them like that." She has a desire as great as her reading appetite, to read the newly released "Pinocchio" that her parents still have not been able to buy her. Now this is something extraordinary about her, especially when she retells the content of different books with ease. R. And to think that until not long ago her teachers believed Klejdia held books in her hands only to look at the pictures. Edmond Laci

Vlora, once again blood on the railway

A victim TIRANE — Railways are becoming ever more dangerous and tragic. And another accident on the tracks. It was the evening of last Thursday when a train running on the Tirane-Durrës railway took with it a 40-year-old man. As the capital’s Forensic Medicine center told Gazeta Shqiptare, the victim was found lifeless only the day after the tragedy and the body, completely mangled by the monstrous "vehicle," could not be saved by the doctors. The trial of the police officers is postponed

— The trial against the four police officers from the Elbasan police station, who have been under arrest for 11 months, has been postponed once again. They are charged with "abuse of duty"; they used violence against three people, one of whom also lost his life. As in last March and before the civil court — the seventh, but this time the City Court — the judges are to examine the unlawful evidence. Thus, while the file is being completed, the defendants will continue to remain in their cells. Me. Ki.

No boats: fishing with dynamite

Vlora, sport divers also protest No boats: fishing with dynamite VLORE — The crackle of dynamite along the southern coast of Albania, from Zvërnec to Himarë, resembles a real "battle." The extermination of the fish of the Ionian Sea — after the people, following the cholera epidemic — and the forced return home of all fishing boats has now helped the dynamite hunters. But while "dynamite" fish has taken over the hungry domestic market, the Sports State Divers Association has protested to the authorities against this phenomenon which, especially now in the September-October period, when fish are more abundant, is extremely harmful. So the odyssey of "dynamite" on the shores of the Ionian is being counted, and because the counteraction of the Financial Police within this year alone has led to the seizure of seven private diving sets. Many fishermen have also not been able to escape this counteraction, and are now preferring to fish with more sophisticated means, such as electric-shock devices. It is interesting that although the fishing boats are currently not working, the price of fish has fallen considerably on the market. Meanwhile, the "price" of dynamite has also seen such a drop, and it is clearly being sought after; the latest increase on the clandestine market is only 100 lek. It is strange because denunciations from the Sports Diving and Hunting Association — and no less from the fishing authorities, especially for the victims? with the name of fish. (S.Ma.)

YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA

Counterfeit banknotes, seminar This was the subject of the "Security Evolution" seminar organized at the Polytechnic University of Tirane — with around 70 specialists in this field. Three Italian specialists in this area also gave presentations on the methods that should be used to detect counterfeit banknotes — foreign and Albanian — as well as important official seals. Vlora, the victim of the sea returns It was an extremely painful day not only for the victim’s family, but also for the citizens of Vlora, in the return from Otranto of the poor "Lipe Lali". The burial of the body of the young man from Vlora, drowned in the clandestine attempt after the latest tragedy on the Apulian coast. Kruja escorts its old Russian friend

A merchant pays for the funeral Kruja escorts its old Russian friend KRUJE — He lived among Albanians for all that time and they were by his side even in his final moments. This is the story of Aleksei Vasilyev Nastasievich, 76 years old, who had lived for 40 consecutive years in the district of Kruja. Although this fact has remained somewhat enigmatic for almost everyone, he had always been respected by the citizens of Kruja, so in the final part of his life Nastasienko had spent it in the city while ill, living in the old city hotel. In recent months, in serious condition, he had been hospitalized, where he ended his life almost alone, without anyone? loss? for almost? by? and? in the final hut of his life. And now the people who organized his funeral too. Meanwhile, the owner of the hotel, wishing to respect the custom to the end, covered all the expenses for it. Thus ended the sad story of this man whom, even today, nobody in the town of Hut recognizes in such a way. Mu. Ar.
