Four guards under accusation

TIRANA — A secret meeting between Nano and Alia in the cells of Tirana Prison. The revelation of this sensational fact — confirmed by testimony from an official source — has been followed by strict measures against four guards of Tirana Prison, among them one woman, after the press was informed by officials of the Prison Directorate. These four people, unnamed, are said to have been placed in solitary confinement under military regulations. Meanwhile, the General Directorate of Prisons may refer the case for criminal prosecution to the Prosecutor's Office. They are also suspected of bringing prohibited items into the cells of Nano and Alia, such as cameras and recorders. The four guards suspected of “abuse of duty” are currently reported as suspended from work.
“It is true that Nano and Alia met secretly several times in the cells of Tirana Prison,” the official confirmed. According to these sources, information about these secret meetings between Nano and Alia had come from various prison employees. Still, the orga [?] more than 10 meters long, with cell doors on both sides, where traditionally — because of the better conditions compared with the other prison cells — only women were held. Also in this part of Tirana Prison there had also remained for a long time the former Bloc member, and now convicted, Ta [?] ?! but public between Nano and Alia — after their arrest — it had been said that there was in the process Nano, when on 11 March of this year former President Alia testified for the first time in relation to the Italian aid scandal.
Now well for another meeting between them, but secret and with consequences for four guards, who, as claimed by the General Directorate of Prisons, had broken the rules of their institution. Meetings, seemingly mysterious and still unexplained as to the reasons and content. But not only that. “These employees,” officials say, “also managed to secretly bring into the isolation rooms of Nano and Alia cameras with film, recorders, food outside the permitted schedule, and even books and newspapers.”
Former president Alia during the trial against Fatos Nano
The prosecutor's office does not comment on this episode, while after the state arrest, the four guards continue to suffer suspension from work.
Nano and Alia had found themselves for the first time in the same prison on 19 August of last year, and former President Alia was still arrested. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister and leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, had been isolated in the cells of this prison about 20 days earlier. Since then, their cells — on the second floor of the building constructed in the time of the Italian occupation — had always faced each other and were very close. A corridor
Pensions for the blind will increase
TIRANA — The pension received by Albanian blind people will be higher. Following the government's latest decision, which has equalized the pension amount between blind people living in the countryside and those living in the city, a disparity inherited from previous years.
The government's decision applies to all Albanian citizens who were born blind or lost their sight before the age of 18. The benefit increase will be 194 lekë for urban blind people and 874 lekë for rural ones. From now on, with this differentiated increase, all blind people will receive the same amount of compensation, regardless of where they live. The pension that these people will receive from the state will be consolidated as a personal income and will not be counted as part of the family's income when receiving economic assistance.
This latest decision thus gives positive support to a proposal made some time ago by a special association. “The Association for the Help of the Blind” had for some time been engaged in efforts to increase the material support for these people, who have suffered from misfortune. (p.r.)

Former owners
KUKES — An industrialist in fuels “shpalloj[?]” has signed off on the work of the Commission for the Return and Compensation of Property, as noted in Kukës. Now, perhaps for the first time in the entire history of what is called the “property issue” in Albania, a family benefits from land with a building, but not in its original location. Because the old site is now underwater.
According to the documents, the property once stood in the center of the old town of Kukës, but after the construction of the artificial lake that area was flooded. The new owner, instead, has asked to receive another parcel of land. For this case, intervention by local institutions and a special review of the file were required.
The news, unusual for property matters, was made known by sources from the local commission. The case once again raises the inherited problems caused by the flooding of the old town and the displacement of its residents.
Arrested after 16 months of searches
SHKODER — He had been wanted by the police since December 1992 and was detained after 16 months of intensive searches. Bajram Kola, 31 years old, is accused of attempting to kill three of his fellow villagers from Nënshati. Kola had managed to evade the police by hiding in a place that had sheltered him for 16 months.
This is the Shkodër Police's second success within a few days in efforts to catch individuals for whom the district prosecutor's office had long issued a warrant. A few days earlier, an 18-year-old had been detained, suspected of involvement in the events of 2 April.

The robbers strike for the third time
LIBOHOVE — The church thieves have appeared again. For the third time they have chosen the church of Labova e Kryqit in Libohovë. And this time their “appetite[?]” was truly tragic. Everything in the church was stolen: chandeliers, oil lamps, silver eagles, parts of the iconostasis and icons of very great value, leaving almost nothing else.
The Church of Labova e Kryqit is one of the most important monuments of Albanian history and culture. It belongs to the Byzantine period of Emperor Justinian. It is precisely this antiquity that has attracted the thieves several times. At first, the large golden cross that gave the church the name it still bears today disappeared. This cross was also valuable to the church and to the villagers themselves; Muslims and Christians protected it. In cases of natural disaster and illness. Despite the villagers' continued searches, even today it has not been found. For the second theft they attacked again. They had struck a second time, taking many icons this time, which were as old as the church itself.
A quarrel among Albanians: one dead
TIRANA — Another criminal act by Albanians in Greece. Information from Gjirokastër and Vlorë says that they killed their friend in the place where they lived. 70-mot[?] Mala from Kuçovë — residing in Egypti Argostol — had come across him and then was shot by his brother. The Greek police are still holding the victim's body, only 20 days after the murder took place. Later, another Albanian had taken the body to the morgue and notified our embassy in Athens. It is still unknown whether the perpetrators of this disgraceful crime have been arrested. (p.r.)

NATO does not attack Goražde, it “breathes”
Bosnia, 200 blue helmets arrive
SARAJEVO — Goražde allows itself a cautious sense of relief. What was supposed to be the day of NATO's attack on Serbo-Bosnian positions in order to bring down what could have been brought upon the civilian population, already tested to the highest degree, was replaced by the arrival of UN blue helmets today. Or rather, it was concluded. And while the wounded are still in Sarajevo, the Serb side continues with threats from Serbo-Bosnian leaders, threatening to withdraw support for UN personnel. At the same time, the blockade of Sarajevo airport and the shortage of humanitarian aid continue. Developments remain unclear, but the city is temporarily spared bombing.
Nearly 200 blue helmets have begun to be deployed in the Goražde area to protect the city's residents and monitor the situation. Tension remains high and expectations of possible intervention have not faded.
