The big battle against cholera

The country reacts to fears of the spread of the dangerous epidemic Around 400 people affected by the disease The country reacts to fears of the spread of the dangerous epidemic The big battle against cholera Around 400 people affected by the disease Measures in Tirana TIRANA — The cholera epidemic has now also affected the two main municipalities of the area and, fortunately, both patients are infected with the virus and have an infected origin. The first is a resident of the capital who had taken part in a wedding in Kuçovë. He is now out of danger, hospitalized at the university city hospital. On Wednesday another resident of Tirana, H. K., around fifty years old, was admitted to the Military Hospital of Tirana. He had been one of the specialists who, together with an emergency team from the capital, went to help the waterworks employees of that area. He had the same symptoms as the other patients: severe diarrhea and vomiting. The case is being monitored. Tirana’s local authorities have immediately taken preventive measures. Increasing chlorine in the city’s drinking water and continuous monitoring of the waters that specialists call hot spots — 56 areas in Tirana where water pipelines are very close to sewage waters — are the main measures taken by them. (d.baz) TIRANA — There are already 400 suspected cholera cases. The number of patients admitted to the hospitals of Berat, Kuçovë and the Military Hospital of Tirana does not correspond — of course — to the confirmed cases of disease, whose diagnosis is being carried out in laboratories authorized by the Ministry of Health. In the village of Drenovicë alone, the number of hospitalized sick people is 40. In cooperation with the WHO, the state authorities are carrying forward the prevention program, not only by disinfecting the water systems with chlorine, but also by informing people about the hygiene measures that must be followed. Everyone must respect them. The increase in hospital admissions seems to show a positive slowdown that gives hope. At the same time, there is still the possibility of the clinics being overwhelmed by a wave of emergency cases, while in Tirana the situation continues to remain tense. Meanwhile, no special alerts have appeared in any district of the country. Other articles on page 2 Children hospitalized in the hospital of Kuçovë

The Germans ‘free’ Milot

Anxiety in Fier FIER — The shadows of fear of cholera have also reached the hospital of Fier. After the discovery of the second outbreak of the epidemic in the village of Drenovicë — only 15 kilometres from the city — the number of people suspected of this disease seems to have appeared. One of the doctors in the infectious diseases ward of Fier hospital told Gazeta Shqiptare. Maybe this happened out of fear among the residents, but these days we have had a slight increase in the number of patients complaining of vomiting and gastrointestinal symptoms. Many of them are residents of villages located near the infected area. According to the same source, no worrying signal had reached the city population by Wednesday. The most suspicious case from Fier appears to be that of a resident who showed up at the city hospital with similar known symptoms. He told Fier doctors that he had been in the infected area in recent days. The doctors preferred to send him to the hospital in Berat, where all suspected cases are now being analyzed. (f.) German pesticides in Albania The Germans ‘free’ Milot MILOT — The work on the operation to evacuate German pesticides from Albania is continuing intensively. The joint Albanian and German technical teams are now concentrated in the warehouse of Milot, where more than one third of the 217 tons of poisons from Shkodër must be handled. After the work at this point is completed, the technicians will focus on Bajzë, where hundreds of barrels of pesticides are stored. From the second set of words, the first points depend on sealing the cans and barrels containing the poisons. While this solution has been adopted at least because the warehouse where they are stored is inside a populated area, which has often caused concern and alarms over fears of poisoning among residents. Albanian specialists — army technicians, soldiers — together with the German ones, dressed in special uniforms with protective masks, are working on packaging the cracked and worn barrels and cans. From there they are loaded into containers brought especially from Germany, which ensure an airtight seal. After this process, the containers will be sent by truck to the port of Durrës, from where they will take the return journey to Germany. The operation to remove pesticides from Albania began in the first half of September. The successive arrival of different specialists for preliminary consultations was confirmed with the return on 8 September of the ship “Jacqueline”, which unloaded about 140 containers at the port of Durrës. According to the planned operational program — in addition to the closures and packaging in Albania, the German government has financed 100 thousand marks so that the operation can be completed in the first week of November. p.re.

Hospital admissions increase

In the hospitals of Berat and Kuçovë KUÇOVË — It seems that the condition of the current patients, while others continue to arrive at the hospitals of Kuçovë and Berat, is improving. Most are in good condition, the doctors at Kuçovë hospital tell Gazeta Shqiptare, where by 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday 20 new people had arrived showing cholera symptoms; diarrhea and vomiting. The same picture in Berat as well. Eighteen people appeared at the doors of the city hospital and ended up in the wards. Two of them — a 4-year-old child and a man — are from the village of Drenovicë, a new focus where cholera seems to have found a frightening spread. By Wednesday the number of people affected from this village was approaching 40. While the first signs of hope for an improvement in the situation have been lit up in the hospitals, life outside them continues amid anxiety and fear. The residents of the city of Kuçovë, especially from the hard-hit “Kazanë” neighbourhood, are obeying every notice or call that indicates protective measures. Children are being sent without delay to the nursery and kindergarten clinic. The market continues to have traffic; the final decision to impose quarantine has also been passed. An emergency atmosphere is also present in Berat. Although so far no cases have been confirmed here, the presence of more than 160 patients in the city hospital has put residents on alert. For days they had been storming the pharmacies, buying antibiotics: tetracycline and toksacillin. “Besides that” — a resident said, mixing everything up — “and we’ve all drunk the water.” Ar. Me.

Durrës, concern at the port

Agencies fear a drop in traffic DURRES — The country has reacted to the first news about the spread of the serious disease across cities. Depending on the distance from the outbreak of the epidemic, different cities have reacted in their own way. In Durrës it seems that one group of the population will suffer the consequences more, while the more healthy people and their problems with transportation, which would otherwise be a concern, have had nothing to do with it at all. While most of the population received the serious news with a kind of guarded, almost alarm-like attitude, people have begun to ask whether the loading and unloading of water by city vehicles has drawn attention to the anchored motorboats on the shores of the port of Durrës. On the opposite coast in Italy, the Italian authorities at the same time planned measures to increase patrols in order to curb the traffic of clandestines, who now also face the risk of infection. This has made suspicious journeys through the port unsafe for them. In Durrës, so far, there has been no sign of any possible fear of leaving the country because of the epidemic, as some had suspected. Travelers are now moving regularly to Italy, and the situation in front of the ticket counters yesterday was not particularly unusual. In the capital — where measures to prevent the spread of the infection seem more organized — and also in other cities across the country, local authorities have defined initial measures even without official confirmation of the cholera outbreak. In the main urban centers they have coordinated inspections in order to preserve and keep under control the currently suspected routes of disease transmission: water supplies. The population of the cities itself has reacted without any sign of alarmism — in some cities, even such as Shkodër, which is far from the cholera focus, with indifference — unlike what early fear had suggested. People have begun storing water in tanks and using it carefully, especially with regard to other solutions. The implementation of other orders concerns the safeguarding of hygiene against the water supply sector, which in most cases still remains a vital problem. Fatos Baxhaku

Burying the jam jars underground

Elbasan, market inspection Specialists order the destruction of dangerous goods Elbasan, market inspection Burying the jam jars underground Specialists order the destruction of dangerous goods ELBASAN — It has not been the fear of cholera that has recently forced the Elbasan Financial Police to intervene and take strict measures against beverages and other food products. Thus, after blocking several of the 300,000 jam jars — and checking their condition — the quantity in question amounted to 80 percent of that stock. Meanwhile, in this same time span, 8,000 bottles of beer were deemed dangerous; their immediate destruction was ordered. “The final destination of the blocked jam jars was determined after a detailed analysis by specialists from the Hygiene Directorate. Thus — after the temporary blockade — of the entire quantity of 300,000 confiscated jars of various kinds, only those from the 1993 production were allowed for use, as they would not be able to remain on the market until 1995. Nearly the entire remaining quantity — about 80 percent — will be destroyed immediately, since it belongs to the 1989-1992 production years. The same severe measure has also been taken against a large quantity of beer. According to the specialists, the analyses showed that they had expired, and it was concluded that these beer brands had long since passed their shelf life. The specialists even found that their use was extremely dangerous. The fact that in the last few weeks more than ten people had gone to the city hospital simply because they had drunk only a few bottles of beer had perhaps prompted the specialists of the Hygiene Directorate to order a broad inspection.” (Me.K.)

A 65-year-old burglar in jail

CURSIVE REALITY TIRANA — Age and temperament do not matter, but neither does the crowding of them. For several nights now, the person known as the “colleague,” who in fact lives in urban poverty in some streets of the capital — called “Skënderi,” who had been trying to profit — has been recognized at every attempt of his. He was of old age and among those arrested for armed robbery, and has a ward in one of Tirana’s prisons, B.M., who is considered to be well off, as he is found arrested in the Tirana Prison, while his explosive device with him and that was powerful at around 100 and perhaps, was moved and arrested at his fortunate midnight. ... [?] about 30 thousand dollars. He had a warehouse on the outskirts of Tirana where the object of the 65-year-old’s “venture” was kept, which he then distributed to various destinations. So far only part of the stolen goods has been seized, simultaneously confirming the special “taste” of B.M., who had chosen the brands “Philips” and “Miro” in installments. The other items such as cola, honey, were requested on the market, as if everything burned is now no longer of any value. In the Tirana Prison — despite the inmate’s “hobby” — neither television nor a parabolic antenna is allowed. (b.)

The little girl in the hands of the «monster»

— He is only being held, but if the accusations now attributed to him are proven, he can truly be called a monster. On Tuesday afternoon, 19-year-old from Tirana, I.A., was taken to Tirana Prison, after being denounced by the family members of a 5-year-old girl for having “had sexual relations by force” with her. Although the investigation has not yet been completed, the condition of the little girl and the horrifying details of this terrible episode leave no doubt about the accused, based on the initial conclusions regarding the sexual acts committed against her.
