Cholera, another outbreak
Peqin, 28 hospitalized
PEQIN — Cholera continues to spread in the village, sending another 28 people to hospital within 24 hours, even though admissions have already been ongoing for some time. This time the victim of the severe virus is Gr[y]kësi in the district of Peqin. Since these are rapid-onset cases — among the hospitalized is a 4-month-old baby — the doctors of this district have been alarmed. Up to yesterday, whenever such outbreaks were discovered, in addition to medical care, specialists from the health service have been working intensively to chlorinate the drinking water supply and to test the water for microbes.
The outbreak of cholera in the village in question has been as sudden as it has been severe. In an effort to identify and block two outbreaks — one at the center of the infection and another in the hospital — 28 residents of Grykasi. “The cases are worrying,” says doctor Lefter Gurkhi for Gazeta Shqiptare, “especially because some of them have contracted the disease’s severe virus. Alongside treating them, work is also underway in parallel to discover the source of the infection. We are two specialists sent by the Ministry of Health and one district specialist dealing with the problems. The white nature of the virus from other cities as well as the village’s entire water supply. Statements by some of the citizens hospitalized in the hospital in Elbasan — statements confirming that they had been without enough water in areas where cholera had spread least — seem to support the first hypothesis, that of the “import” of the village’s microbial source.”
Meanwhile, several other facts raise questions about the village water supply, accusing it of being the cause of the spread of the infection. The main point on which these suspicions are based seems to be the fact that the two water networks supplying drinking water to this village have not been chlorinated for some time. For this very reason, the hygiene directorates in the districts of Peqin and Elbasan had blocked the water systems of the villages of Bujëz, Jagodinë and Murrizqan for lack of a chlorination tank. And while laboratory analyses of the waters of Grykësi have not yet been completed, there are other symptoms among the hospitalized that cast doubt and suspicion on it. Here, it is reported that all those infected with cholera are people who drank water apparently because of the location of their houses in the village — from one of the two branches of the water system that supplies the village. Moreover, even though the hospitalized patients (a group of 3-4 people) belong to the same family.
The closest cholera outbreak to Grykasi has been the village of Shushicë in the district of Elbasan. And there were two spouses from this village who had been admitted for treatment to the city hospital. But while the husband had managed to recover, his 59-year-old wife had been overcome by the merciless microbe and it caused her death. The immediate reaction of her relatives — blinded by grief — to take her from the hospital to be buried in the village — had alarmed the specialists of the district hygiene directorate. The fear that the illegal transport of the deceased — bypassing the procedures and preventive measures taken in such cases — might have caused the infection of other people, led to the creation of a group of specialists to carry out the necessary checks and decisions on site.

Tiranë
The water company under scrutiny
TIRANË — Serious violations in the procurement of budget funds were identified at the Municipal Water Supply Company in Tiranë by the State Control Service.
Failure to respect transparency in the organization of tenders for various water-supply projects as well as other procedures led the inspectors to demand the dismissal of the company director.
In the tender for repairing two wells in Bërxullë and reconstructing “Karl Gega” street, worth 3 million 300 thousand lekë — according to the official news agency — the winning company had not submitted the full documentation. It was also verified that the Water Supply Company had allowed other irregularities — it had not calculated the criteria for evaluating the bids and the tender had been restricted rather than open. Such violations were also noted in the organization of the tender for three water-supply projects won by the firms “Arbëri”, “Interkonstruksion” and “Buj-1”. The State Control has requested the dismissal of the director of the Water Supply Company, Vladimir Gjoni, and disciplinary measures for three other employees.

YESTERDAY IN ALBANIA
Delvinë, three cases of plague
In Delvinë, at least three cases of plague in humans have been identified over the past few months. The first reports were given by the official news agency, according to which the mayor of Delvinë and the district Agriculture Directorate have strengthened measures to prevent the disease and others such as plague or brucellosis. In fact, the three cases were caused by the consumption of uninspected meat. Another year, other veterinarians throughout the area were also mobilized, while very many villages in the district observed a strengthening of work on the control of slaughtered cattle.
Berat, “baby-killer” attack
A 22-year-old man fell victim to an attack by two very young killers. Arjan Sako, from the city of Berat, was killed in the early hours after the knife wound he received in the middle of the chest. The police have arrested one of the two attackers, 16-year-old L.D., and are searching for his accomplice, S.Xh., also very young, 18 years old, who managed to hide immediately after committing the serious act. According to official reports, the cause of the incident was “trivial motives.” This is the second killing act verified within a few days in Vlorë, where another 16-year-old had been killed under unclear circumstances.
Kukës
Five shops robbed in one night
KUKËS — It was a real assault on the private premises of Kukës.
Unstable thieves managed to rob 5 private local shops in a single night, managing to take the goods. The damage is incalculable; according to initial estimates it amounts to millions of lekë. The concern has spread to the owners of other premises, who spend the night in fear, almost “asleep.” Many of them have strengthened the guarding of their shops with armed men. “There has been a cause for alarm,” says one of them — “the closure of the shops has not yet been announced.”
Shortage for several days
Vlorë, difficulties with fuel
VLORË — In recent days, people in Vlorë have had great difficulty obtaining fuel.
One of the fuel workers told Gazeta Shqiptare that the reason is that the Ballsh refinery has not been operating for several days. In fact, Vlorë has had difficulties even when the fuel supply was regular. About 7,000 cars and 300 boats located here are supplied 90 percent with diesel that still remains state-owned; the private distribution agency does not yet exist. Two state-run outlets are located around the city, one for state vehicles and the other for private ones. Their equipment has now been worn out by long and exhausting work.
The problem is even harder because of the other boats, which are supplied with canisters and continue to be congested, transported by vans. Such a situation presents a risk at any moment. Meanwhile, at the place locals call “Pusi i Mezinit,” ships continue to deposit fuel. (St. Ma.)

Brussels: the far right advances
The rise of the Belgian far right and xenophobia is also felt in administrative institutions, and while the Socialist Party loses ground, the Social-Christian wing remains standing. The Liberal Party, in opposition with the center, does not benefit from the voting imbalances, because no major risk emerged. The first results in a number of districts show the far right and the National Front advancing in the French-speaking south and in the north [...]

NIKOZI — An extraordinary American military force — as the U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry called it — made up of warplanes reached the Persian Gulf in the early hours of the day to persuade Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to renounce his threats against Kuwait on its border. Baghdad has gathered divisions, tanks and thousands of soldiers and is under [...] ratit, occupied four years ago. According to the source of the Iraqi “Komet Moskber”, one of the main opposition groups against the Baghdad regime, at least 20 divisions have been targeted; the Republican Guard has reached only two kilometers from the neutral zone between Iraq and Kuwait and other troops are being sent to this area by train. The evening developments constitute, since three years have been accumulating around the neutral zone, which extends kilometers into Iraqi territory and five into Kuwait, “real military facts”.
