Sea disaster: a horror

The father of one of the arrested speaks Hours of anxiety in Vlorë, little hope for the 11 missing The negative scale of the tragedy of 12 October is becoming ever clearer. The hopes of finding the 11 missing alive are now minimal, so the death toll could rise to 13. Those rescued are the 25 clandestines from Wednesday who were sheltered in the offices of the “Agimi-Carlitas” brigade in Brindisi — another 7 survivors were admitted to an Italian Austrian ship. “Peru” Hashin with the algae beard on an inflatable boat, 35 miles from the Apulian coast. The adventure of the latter had happened only two days after the first accident. VLORE — The tragic causes of the night of 12 October still remain closed off. Italian investigators are considering all possible hypotheses, but according to what was declared on Saturday by the navy, they have ruled out the involvement of any discharge at sea or a collision at the bottom of a boat. At the moment, or a strong impact between two vessels that later led to an explosion near the dam. In any case, by Friday evening there was still no official confirmation of the causes. Vlora experienced the news coming from the opposite Adriatic coast with anxiety. Confusion was also increased by the anonymous phone calls of the victims and the survivors. In the first days after the news, in many families, many relatives flooded the post offices. The call center was in Vlorë. Otranto. Until late evening, whole groups of people, on the road where they were supposedly lined up, the night-time clandestines in Ohlsin could have been stolen mainly in the waters of Vlorë. “I cannot accept the accusations being made against Rolandi — Lame told Gazeta Shqiptare — my son was not the owner of any speedboat. No document can prove this. He was going to Italy because the night before he tragically lost his mother. My son was the one who called the Italian authorities on his mobile phone to hurry up and save the passengers; if it had not been for him, the tragedy would have been much worse.” Stavri Marko Testimony “Esmeralda, I love you very much.” Then the waves swallowed them; now she, Esmeralda Nini, 24 years old, is in hospital while her husband Qani Topojani is missing at sea. In the girl’s account, which begins with that desperate farewell, here is the story of the 48 Albanians drowned in the middle of the sea, as they were heading for the Italian coast. Streptococcus in the taps from which drinking water flows

The microbe comes from sewage From analyses carried out in several districts TIRANE — The concern over infections from drinking water continues to remain present throughout Albania. Recent analyses carried out in several parts of the country have shown that the amount of bacteria in running water and sewer systems has increased. The Institute of Public Health has also continued to issue a series of recommendations for strong measures to be taken to chlorinate drinking water. Epidemiologists say that the findings of hygiene specialists in different cities have shown that drinking water remains polluted and a risk for epidemics. Analyses carried out in recent days at household taps have found the presence of various microbes. According to specialists, especially in the outskirts of cities, the water-supply system is connected to sewage networks and this poses a serious risk. The use of chlorine and the disinfection of well water is also very difficult, and from this lack of control a situation is emerging in Albania. And indeed, the analyses carried out show a large presence of fecal streptococcus. Every day, the results of samples taken from the situation in Tirana speak of considerable pollution, which becomes especially worse after rain, when runoff mixes with well water and enters the water-supply network. Evidence of this is also provided by cases in various cities and villages. P. re.

Appeal in the villages: “Not at weddings”

Elbasan, cholera is spreading ELBASAN — The spread of the epidemic is frightening for the whole family. Because people from the city of Elbasan have now been affected — the only elderly person among the victims has died, precisely after being admitted to hospital. Since yesterday, new cases of high fever, vomiting and general weakness have appeared. Doctors, on the other hand, have called for movement and gatherings in the villages to be limited, especially weddings. Thus, while the number of admissions continues in Gr[y?]kën [?] — currently 55 — this is again accompanied by the fact that 11 infected people from the surrounding villages are also there. The latest “victims” — all after visits to G[r?]kësh — have brought the number of patients in the Elbasan hospital to a high level and 2 of them, in very serious condition, have been immediately sent to clinics in the capital. Although for days it was said that G[?]ykëshi was “sick” with cholera, in the village it had not been possible to stop the weddings. In fact, at one of them, the groom happened to be hospitalized, while the wedding continued at his house. Initiatives that have now cost the organizers dearly, but also their friends. (M. KL)

Infant deaths: innocent milk

Laboratory tests show that it is fine FIER — Meanwhile there is talk in the ministry that the maternity hospital in Fier may have had a reason for the deaths of several newborn babies. The analyses carried out have completely ruled out the fault of the powdered milk used to feed the children in this hospital. In this tragedy, this product has nothing to do with it at all. For the suspected mothers it remains to leave; the real causes still have to be determined. Special references also come from the highest leaders of powdered milk in Albania itself. “We are in contact with the milk-producing company in France, ‘Regilait’ — explains to Gazeta Shqiptare Edmond Stafa, director of ‘Franc Lait’ for Albania — which exports to 51 countries around the world, including excellent results in all countries.” The hygiene, veterinary and institute laboratories in France, in April 1994, fully ruled out the possibility of toxic effects for humans. Now in Fier attention has shifted to uncovering the situation — suspicions fall only on one kind of infection that was spreading rapidly in the maternity ward — and measures have been taken to close some entrances and disinfect.
