The night of biblical rains: Albania wakes up under water

Three dead, several injured, thousands of hectares under water, broken irrigation canals... Here is the chronicle of 48 hours of apocalypse. But Fierza turns disaster into energy and moves out of the critical level

Parliament dismisses Brozi

Yesterday the PD group vote: 73 to 0 Berisha’s proposal is approved. The new chairman is Avni Shehu TIRANA - Zef Brozi will no longer be president of the Court of Cassation. Yesterday parliament decided in a lightning vote that Brozi should no longer be at the head of the Albanian justice system. The decision came several hours after the Constitutional Court ruling, and the President Berisha’s proposal reached the deputies: “To dismiss Zef Brozi from all functions in the Constitutional Court because of his illegal activity, the serious violation of human freedoms and rights.” The vote in the chamber was unanimous: only PD deputies were present. 73 in favor and none against. Brozi must leave the judicial institution for two years; he can no longer remain even as an ordinary judge there. Immediately after Brozi’s dismissal, the vote was held for the new leadership names of the Court of Cassation. On page 7 Brozi’s empty chair in the Chairman’s office (photo: Hektor Pustina)

Tirana Maternity Hospital: 20 lives are lost every day

Abortion / Among the patients of Obstetrics Cassation Ilir Hoxha remains in prison And seven months behind bars Cassation Ilir Hoxha remains in prison And seven months behind bars On page 5 TIRANA - It was a truly terrible moment. I had made up some things to get him out of the house for a few hours; I wanted at all costs to leave the family. I had arranged to meet him, but I did not know his name. At the maternity hospital - I’m not saying the city, because especially the doctor returned me as I was, at least in front of people - they did not give me anesthesia. As they later told me, my cries could be heard from the other side of the hospital. But it wasn’t my fault, the pains were unbearable... This is the testimony of a young girl - around 19 years old - who will carry the memory of her pregnancy forever and who now lives in fear that one day she will no longer be able to become a mother. Her boyfriend did not want the child, since he had no intention of marrying her A. Çausholli on page 5

TIRANA - “They have dared to violate the Party’s orders: they must be denounced before the whole people.” The photograph published above belongs to the year 1986. It shows several women and children beside the ruins of an old church. But the “act” has not escaped the “vigilant eye of the Party”. Its local secretary urgently summons the photographer Llesh Prendi. Llesh hesitates in front of the frightened faces of the women and children: to turn them into subjects would be a dangerous heresy, but he also could not become complicit in such an act. “Do not be afraid,” he whispers to the women, “these photos will be seen by no one.” Then the women agree to be photographed. A little girl - the one dressed in white - covers with her body the bride of her brother, because of her age, that is, more exposed to persecution. Others look angrily at the photographer’s lens, which thus captures a historical moment. “Of course I told them that my film was ruined - says Llesh himself now - by destroying the photos he had just taken from his rich archive, and so the women were able to keep their families; I myself kept my word.” Twenty years have passed, and Llesh - who is now living in Italy - has not met again the women he captured in his lens. “I only want them to know that I kept my word; since then, no one has seen these photos,” he adds. The story of the photographer Llesh Prendi coincides with today’s debate taking place in Albania. Open the files or not? Open them or keep them reserved for politicians, for everyone, for journalists, or for a few... to judge the guilty? Some think that not all files should be opened without exception; others say that if Albania is to move forward, then this chapter must be considered closed. The story transmitted by Prendi’s photograph will perhaps refresh the memory of both sides. f.bax.
