"L'America" in Tirana: controversy rekindled
A part from the filming of the movie in the capital Photo: H. Pustina
Recently, the film "L'America" was screened yesterday also in Tirana, although without the participation of director Amelio and his Italian crew. The cinema hall at the International Center of Culture, packed to the brim, was also attended by the Albanian film elite, which was eagerly awaiting the screening of the film on the white screen. The evening, organized by the Italian Embassy in cooperation with the QNK, once again brought before the audience images of the communist dictatorship in one of its last days, opening some of the harshest debates ever heard in the field of art. Many would have liked to send Amelio to the "hell of the woods".
It was constantly whispered during the screening. Everyone could find a piece of their own life in that film, and when they do not find it, they react. Others, those who cast a realistic glance five years earlier, thought that in his film Amelio was no longer speaking about Albania, but was going beyond its borders, placing his work on the borders of the universal.
A few minutes after the debate had started, the first negative reaction came from director Pecani. A deep silence covered the cinema hall, making us think that this was all Amelio’s film had to offer. But no. Arapi calmly explains the first positive signs about the film among the audience, so much so that everyone understands the film’s message very well, although criticism was not lacking at the end. But the question the young spectator asked himself was: "Will the film be shown also to the public outside the small hall of the QNK?"

The state does not pay the state: Here are KESH’s debtors
The ministries’ debt reaches 55,244,000 lek
The state does not pay the state:
Here are KESH’s debtors
TIRANA - The amount that budgetary entities must pay to KESH for deliveries with electricity distribution has reached 55,244,000 lek. It is the six-month period - from 1 April to 30 September - for which the ministries have not collected their obligations. According to a decision by Meksi’s cabinet, all this amount was to be deducted from the debtors’ share of their 1995 budget fund. The city with the largest "debtor" is Tirana, whose ministries’ obligation amounts to 35,971,000 lek.

SHKODËR - Less fuel toward the land of war. Three tankers with oil and nine other tankers were seized on Wednesday evening, as they were trying to leave Albania’s northern borders to reach Montenegro. The confirmation comes from the Shkodër Police Station, whose officers, in cooperation with their colleagues in the Customs Police, were the protagonists of the latest anti-smuggling "blitz".

Rare, but true
ELBASAN - (Did you hear Karolos Papoulias? The "sensational" request came from the mouth of an Albanian who wanted to exchange his "ordinary" old Albanian name for the exotic and unfamiliar Greek one. The proposal was submitted in writing to the municipal council of the city of Elbasan, among many others. But while the courage of living like this suppresses and suppresses the scandal completely in the very fever of the name - from Rexhep to Rexhinad - this time the imagination (or something else) has gone deeper. The Albanian asked to be naturalized with the name of the Greek Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias. Besides the benefits, perhaps, something has exploded. The forgetfulness of the strange request may have had in mind another passport name of the Minister, brave men from Fier parents. But apparently he had not forgotten the benefits he would have had in Greece from the well-known surname. Fortunately, the municipal council proved to be "generous" and rejected the request...

Today, the Center Pole begins its first political action
A joint rally of PAD and PSD in Kukës
TIRANA - The Center Pole is starting to act. Today, Skënder Gjinushi of PSD and Arben Imami of PAD are attacking united Kukës. A meeting with the electorate of this area has been organized by the two parties in the name of the Center Pole, which is headed by the chairman of the Pole, because PSD and PAD decided to work together and offer: ownership to future voters, the main leaders of the parties will explain to the people of Kukës at the first rally. Only a few days ago, after the meeting between Gjinushi and Zogaj, a move by the Social Democrats was made in the capital. The third move, PSD and PAD decided to carry out a legal entry which, according to them, would have as its task the protection of the parties of the Center Pole as well as its own political representatives. A lawsuit by the two parties together addressed to the Strasbourg Court against the separation of the levels of the anti-genocidal law marked the beginning of joint political actions, just as two third decisions emerged from the first political meeting of the office and the Social Democratic leader. For three weeks and two months PAD and PSD have put forward the idea of creating a Center Pole. An idea that had been put forward much earlier while the electoral threshold stood at 8 percent. The creation of possible alliances among several opposition parties was one of the political debates that at that time dominated the press pages. The closeness between PAD and PSD was immediately expressed in statements by the leaders of these parties. While the Socialists had openly spoken against such alliances, other statements came from the headquarters of PAD and PSD. Ceka and Gjinushi then stated that they would not form pre-election alliances with PS. A declaration also supported by Zogaj and yet the statement that the problem of alliances was a major issue and partly out of place at another time.
