Abandoned, in the home of a benefactor
TIRANA - After knocking on the doors of many institutions and finding neither patience nor a sense of compassion, a 35-year-old man from Selita turned to the newspaper with his concern: “We want to make the little one, Mujash, whom I found myself, like my son, like our own...”
He speaks this way as he recalls the morning of last January 28, when by chance he had gone to the Laprakë neighborhood. While waiting in shock, he heard the desperate crying of an infant. Curiosity led him to the garage of the kindergarten near the apartment building where he was. And there, a mother had left behind the “gift” that God had apparently reserved for him. The little boy had quieted everyone in the nearby apartment blocks, whose residents did not know where or why a newborn baby was crying alone: “I am married and have two sons,” says Xhevit Taqaçi, the person who found the baby. But his brother Ylviu has no children, despite having been married for twenty years. “I thought my brother is young—only 38—and could become the child’s adoptive father.” “Perhaps God himself placed him in our hands,” says the chance passerby. “He was very tiny, just born that day. I spoke to my brother and his wife, and they happily accepted my proposal. But we know that we cannot ‘claim’ the baby unless we notify the law-enforcement authorities.” The baby lived for three weeks in the maternity hospital, while now he is apparently in a nursery near Kombinat, registered under the name Dejva Palati. For the Takaçi family, who hope to overcome the obstacles to adopting the abandoned child, he will always remain the boy named Shpëtim.

BERAT — Southern Albania is once again gripped by anxiety over tremors originating deep in the earth. Yesterday it was Berat’s turn; its residents spent several seconds anxiously feeling the ground move “beneath their feet.” Although it was a light earthquake and nothing has yet been confirmed, yesterday’s lunchtime tremor caused no damage to property or people, leaving only a lasting impression in people’s conversations after the brief movement of a very short-lived earthquake.
Thus Berat became another point in southern Albania to feel the tremors of an earthquake. At 2:10 p.m. yesterday, a tremor measuring 3.5 was felt in the city of “a thousand and one windows.” The tremors lasted several seconds and appeared to move from west to east. No reports of earthquake damage anywhere in the city have been confirmed. According to city sources, the tremors are thought to have measured more than three points. Official sources, citing the Meteorological Institute, report tremors measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale. Southern Albania is a seismologically sensitive area. Earthquakes with their epicenters in the south, part of the Albanian seismic zone, have a significant effect that is also felt in Albania. But after Gjirokastra, Tepelena and Saranda, it is now the turn of the next place—and it was the stone-built city of Berat.
