“Albania, in government, needs a majority system.” That is the prime minister Aleksandër Meksi, who considers this idea a factor in preserving the country’s stability and who, for Gazeta Shqiptare, has drawn up a balance sheet of his cabinet’s work for the year that has just ended. The many problems—corruption, water, electricity, clandestinity—, the achievements, and also what could have been done better: this is what the head of the Albanian government has answered.

TIRANE - The New Year 1996 seems likely first to bring joy to political prisoners and some of the best-known convicts who are still in prison; hopes have grown that they will benefit from a very soon pardon, rumors of which have become increasingly consistent, and even reliable sources from the Democratic Party have confirmed the truth of this news for Gazeta Shqiptare.
If this benefit goes ahead, it is expected to be larger once the President formalizes his move for this New Year. The list drawn up at the Presidency will contain more than 20 names. Those who appear to be most excluded from the suspected beneficiaries are some weighty figures from the left. At least some well-known names with political weight, especially former socialist prisoners, will likely be on the list. At least so far, Fatos Nano, the well-known political convict of the opposition, has also benefited.
Those known on the list also include relatives of two well-known figures: the widows of Enver Hoxha and his two children, who will be placed under the President’s special care. In any case, reliable sources who testified yesterday for Gazeta have still not been able to confirm the names of those who will benefit in terms of freedom.
