Yesterday, during about the first 20 minutes of the court hearing for former president Ramiz Alia, the other defendants and five accused arrested since 6 December 1991, proceedings took place in the overcrowded chamber of the Court of Cassation before hundreds of people. Public interest was very high.
Interest from Albanian and foreign media was also very high. PD leaders Pjetër Arbnori, Tritan Shehu and Aleksandër Meksi also entered the hall, while its leader, Sali Berisha, was in his office. As soon as the judicial panel chaired by Pjetër Celibashi opened the session, defendant Ramiz Alia asked for the trial to be postponed. More precisely, for the hearing of the witnesses, who are numerous, to be postponed. Alia initially asked that only those witnesses whose testimony he considered essential be presented. He then requested that another 45 witnesses not be presented either.
TIANE - Among the accused who requested a postponement of the trial, even though yesterday's court session marked a victory for justice, they have also withdrawn their own requests. It was the President of the Court of Cassation, Pjetër Celibashi, who, on behalf of the judicial panel, clarified the session and explained that the trial would continue according to the rules, giving the parties the opportunity to present their requests.
TIANE - In yesterday's session, debates over the presentation of witnesses were also noted, while outside the hall public interest continued. Afterwards, the trial moved into the phase of hearing the parties' positions.

The SP will go to the elections alone

“With a coalition, even the votes of the Democrats, above, really after-form...”
TIANE - There will be no pre-electoral alliance of the Socialists in this year's parliamentary elections. This idea will take hold because it emerged for the first time from yesterday's meeting held at the central headquarters of the SP in Tirana. The National Steering Committee, as well as the presidency of the National Assembly of this party, decided not to cooperate before the elections with any political formation.
'In this way our victory will be more certain and not dependent on anyone,' said one of the party leaders. However, the meeting stressed that after the elections there may be a political agreement for governing.
From monitoring the meeting it was understood that the Socialists aim to present themselves as the only opposition force facing the PD. According to some participants, this choice is linked to the need to preserve the party's political profile.
