He grabbed me by the hands and pointed the automatic weapon at me and the child. Ismail got up from the bed and snatched it away by force. Then the shots rang out.” This is the first testimony of Ismail’s young wife. She insists that the incident happened in self-defense. Neighborhood residents say that the American soldier had entered the house seeking shelter, but armed and in a confused state. According to the family, Ismail had no intention of killing him, but of removing the danger from the house. His relatives further say that after the incident he did not flee, but waited for the police. The case has caused a great deal of reaction in the city. Ismail’s relatives declare that he was a calm and hardworking man. They claim that the family is in difficulty and that his wife has been left alone with the child.
