TIRANË - By separate acts, the Albanian president yesterday granted pardons or reduced the sentences of 39 convicts. Under this decision, the head of state reduced by 8 years the sentence of former prime minister Fatos Nano, and also reduced by 2 years the sentence of former deputy prime minister Bashkim Kopliku and former Defence Minister Safet Zhulali. Also yesterday, in another decision, Berisha pardoned two years of sentence for former deputy prime minister Ylli Bufi, former deputy prime minister and Minister of Agriculture Ilir Mëhilli, former Transport Minister Arben Malaj, former Foreign Minister Alfred Serreqi, former deputy Defence Minister Mhill Haxhiaj, former Director General of Customs Hysen Sharra, former Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Tefta Cami, former deputy Education Minister Niko Veizi, former chief of staff to former Prime Minister Fatos Nano Edmond Haxhinasto, and he also reduced by 3 years the sentence of former deputy Finance Minister Dylber Vrioni, former deputy Industry Minister Arian Starova and former deputy Trade Minister Sotir Puto. In another decision, the sentences of 24 other people were reduced.
TIRANË - Following the many reactions to the sentences handed down to former senior officials of the socialist government, President Sali Berisha intervened yesterday to soften part of the measures. The Socialist Party called this decision a partial correction of a mistake, and demanded the full release of Fatos Nano and the others.
