Was a radioactive ship sent from Durrës?
Mystery after the stopping of the "Korabi" in Italy: The captain in prison
The first suspicions about a plutonium waste trafficking operation denounced one year earlier
The ship "Korabi", which departed on 7 March 1994, has been blocked in the port of Brindisi on the charge of carrying a "toxic and radioactive cargo". At least that is what "La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno" wrote yesterday, according to which the arrest of the Albanian captain, Qani Bregu, was made as part of an investigation into an international trafficking network of radioactive and toxic waste, which is said to have been transported through Albania with final destination Kosovo. The charge is now part of a huge file at the Brindisi Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating a trafficking route that starts in Greece and passes through Albania, Montenegro and then Italy. At the center of the investigation is also a plutonium cargo denounced one year earlier.
According to the article, the ship was stopped after suspicious residue and irregular documentation were found on board. Captain Qani Bregu has been placed in prison, while the investigations are being carried out in cooperation with the Italian police and port authorities. So far there has been no official Albanian confirmation regarding the nature of the cargo.
