Meanwhile, the Independent Union of the Urban Bus Depot has continued to insist on its protest against this proposal and to demand that the strikes be repeated: “Who guarantees us that privatization won’t leave us out on the street?” is the concern raised by Edmond Gjata, deputy chairman of the Bus Union. The Tirana Municipality’s seal has been stolen

Sensational robbery at the archive offices TIRANA - The capital’s Municipality has “lost its seal.” Unbelievable but true: the incident took place yesterday at around 12:30, when two archive employees discovered that the Municipality’s seal was missing from a locked drawer. The word “lost” has a delicate meaning, especially when it has been replaced by “robbery.” In the end, the two archive employees, Mimoza Vllamasi and Nina Zoto, were questioned by investigators from the capital’s Police Station No. 1, along with the guard, who was released immediately after questioning. After the theft was discovered, the Municipality was closed by law-enforcement authorities until the end of working hours. For more than an hour, police surrounded the building, allowing no one to enter or leave, and physically searched all three employees inside the building, including the Municipality employees themselves. The episode began at around 12:00, when the two employees, according to what they told investigators, locked the seal in the drawer and then locked the door of the other room. Around thirty minutes later, when they returned, they found, according to their account, the door locked and the secret drawer locked, but the seal was gone. It is not the first time that such sensational thefts have occurred at the Municipality. Two years and three months earlier, in April 1993, the Tirana executive office was the target of a scandalous robbery. Just 10 metres from the Municipality secretary’s office, the salaries of the members of the Municipal Council had been stolen. The money, amounting to 200,000 lekë, was kept in an office far from the office of Tirana’s Number One. so.bal / i.la

“We want you to protect our lives”

After a 19-year-old student was stabbed to death “We want you to protect our lives” Berat, dramatic appeal by 300 high-school students BERAT - “We do not want mourning, we do not want tears. In the name of reason, but also of our grief, we want the maximum sentence to be imposed on the killers.” This is a heartfelt appeal, the grave words of all 300 students at the “D.Karbunara” high school in Berat, who have lost their 19-year-old friend, Klodian Mema, stabbed to death in the city centre. They have immediately appealed to the highest Albanian authorities and are asking for “something simple: justice and fairness.” For the first time, the alarm over the killings and crimes that so often fill the daily news is being sounded through the grief of students—a large group of young people who want fear and anxiety removed from their lives. “This is not the first time such a murder has happened in our city. One by one, these things have become part of our lives,” the students of Berat write. It is a disturbing statement that should make us all reflect. These young people feel at risk and want help; they want Justice; they want the state not to allow “the hands of killers who take innocent people’s lives to walk the streets again, almost proud of the deed they have committed.” The appeal made today by the young people of Berat is a human appeal, far removed from propaganda and politics: it is addressed to ministers who are parents and politicians who are parents, asking them to take care, because outside their offices a child is losing their life to a knife, a bullet is piercing a young person’s heart. “On Kledion’s empty desk today there is a photograph and bunches of flowers. As people in positions of authority, and at least as parents, work and judge so that no more desks like this are left empty in Albanian schools,” concludes the letter, signed in the trembling hand of 300 Berat students.
