“I escaped the hell of war in the former Yugoslavia”

Story “I escaped the hell of war in the former Yugoslavia” Fatmir’s account from Kosovo BRINDISI - They are lined up neatly on the old, scratched sideboard, next to one another. They are portraits of the three brothers of Fatmir Mziu, a 23-year-old Albanian from Serbica, a village in Kosovo. Fatmir should have been in the war zone in the former Yugoslavia; he now lives in hiding in an apartment in Taviano, from which he comes out only occasionally, for fear of being sent back to his homeland. If that were to happen, he would be forced to take up arms on behalf of the Serbs, something he does not want at all. Toti Bellone on page 3

Companies up for auction: vouchers turn Albanian citizens into shareholders

Vrioni announces the major privatization phase TIRANA - Albania is preparing to join the “dance” of privatization in full. “The first 20 companies are ready to be privatized, with 800 privatization vouchers, becoming joint-stock companies.” This was stated yesterday by Deputy Prime Minister Dylber Vrioni himself. After the distribution of securities to former political prisoners and to the elderly, this is the second major step—perhaps the most important—in the long road to privatization. On page 5

TIRANË - “The purpose of my visit here is to see the progress of the work on the Uji i Kristaltë project and to meet our servicemen working there.” TIRANË - “The purpose of my visit here is to see the progress of the work on the Uji i Kristaltë project and to meet our servicemen working there. We are very interested in this project, since this is a rare opportunity for the American army as well,” said yesterday the person who expressed these words, one of the most important figures in the American military in Europe, the commander of the U.S. Army forces in Europe, General William Couch. The legend of the red bear that makes sheep disappear

Krujë, alarmed villagers guard their sheepfolds The legend of the red bear that makes sheep disappear The strange story reaches as far as the city KRUJË—At least, there are those who have seen it up close and alive. The “dangerous” bear that has finally alarmed the villagers in the areas around Krujë appeared red. Just 30 kilometres from the city, it has appeared in recent days: the solitary bear continues to keep villagers in their homes on edge. Has it threatened them? The villagers say they are not afraid for themselves; their livestock and domestic animals are at risk. Suddenly, a way of seeing reality differently. “What are we to do?” say the frightened villagers. Some have sounded the alarm—“they are the ones who claim to have seen the bear up close”—over the missing sheep. But no one “dares” to approach the red bear openly as it roams around. No one has managed to catch it in the act, with them wearing them. They say they have also been left with an impression themselves, or that they have heard its “song.” The village elders say evening is the rare animal’s favourite time to leave tracks. The villagers do not know what might happen to their livestock again. Perhaps it is the bear that has made them disappear. For now, they have no definite information. So far, only a few rumours have raised concerns about the danger the bear poses to their domestic animals. The municipalities in this area have remained silent so far. Where, and for how long, will the red-coloured bear “live” near and far from the villagers of Krujë? It remains a source of worry for them. Nd.Go
