The weather’s “madness” over the North: 5 dead

The Western Lowlands are flooded; villagers despair over the damage Major damage in Lezhë, Laç and Krujë. The Tirana–Shkodër national highway remains blocked for many hours Tragic incident in Kalivaç. As a car carrying five people crossed a stream, it was swept away by the raging water. There is no hope for the unfortunate passengers. Hundreds of vehicles stranded near Laç The damage caused by the major flooding has yet to be calculated. Nevertheless, so far Lezhë appears to be the worst-hit area. The press cannot reach the North, while telephone lines are experiencing a “blackout” LEZHË—The weather’s “madness” has burst over the Western Lowlands. While everyone was sweating in the August heat, suddenly torrential rains struck thousands of rural homes mercilessly. Small bridges swept away by the raging water, isolated homes, telephone lines out of service, fields planted with great effort—which farmers look forward to all year—now nothing but heaps of mud or small, murky lakes. And the Tirana–Lezhë national highway blocked along several stretches, and, finally, five people who have tragically lost their lives. The toll of the disaster has proved heavier than expected; On page 3 From yesterday’s flooding in Laç. Photo: R. Bara

Rain heading south: sunshine on Tuesday

More rain and storms METEOROLOGISTS TIRANA—Temperatures lower than usual, rain-bearing winds, torrential downpours. It’s only August—could the weather be “going crazy”? Meteorologists, glued to their instruments, offer no optimistic forecast, at least for the next two days, while the wave of bad weather appears set to move down toward the southeast of the country. The sea will remain very rough for another two days, and a strong wind will sweep across the entire country from the North. So, negative forecasts for everyone, especially those who have not yet finished their holidays. On page 3

Civic associations

KORÇË - Civic police sections are springing up in Albania, too. It is Korça and its Police Commissariat that are trying, for the first time, to “modernize” concrete cooperation between citizens and the law-enforcement authorities. Around 1,500 citizens have now been mobilized to confront crime, providing the first signs of success—a path already taken in many places, from the USA to Japan. The first “experiment”—already carried out in Korçë—seems likely to reach the Parliamentary Commission for Defense, Public Order and SHIK, even though current Albanian laws do not prevent such a modern initiative. The protagonists themselves, speaking on TV, have said that their public role has nothing in common with the old model that communism had imposed for decades on Albanian soil. Three months without a single murder, 51 wanted people apprehended, and no road accidents on roads used by an average of ten thousand vehicles: these are all the work of the civic sections, previously unknown in Albania. Meanwhile, public order in Korçë is experiencing its best period in recent times. (p.re.)

Lufthansa line resumes service at Rinas

The line resumes Lufthansa back at Rinas TIRANË - “Lufthansa” is returning to Albanian skies. After a break of nearly four years, Germany’s famous airline has agreed to restore air links with Albania as well. The news has been confirmed by “Lufthansa” itself, which is now waiting only for September 14 to launch its aircraft from Europe’s major airport—Frankfurt—toward Rinas airport. On page 3

Mother of the poor turned 85 yesterday

TIRANË - She marked her 85th birthday simply—as she will live her life. The Albanian Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, known throughout the world as Mother Teresa of Calcutta, continued to pray. While the public’s attention was focused on the shrine, she prayed for the victims of the railway disaster that claimed hundreds of lives in northern India. Thousands of people took part in the 85th-birthday ceremony, wishing not only to share in a religious observance, but also to express their deep respect for the “mother of us all.”

Durrës, enforcement officers accused by the Ministry

Complaint also filed against Brozi The inspection uncovers serious violations What just a few days ago was an inspection at the Enforcement Office in the capital has now erupted in Durrës as well: “violations of the law and endless delays imposed on citizens, institutions or various companies that, through court rulings, have won a right or been assigned obligations.” On page 5
