Con artist driver ends up in handcuffs

GJIROKASTER - The con artist driver ends up in handcuffs. Every night, after parking on the edge of the stream and in it, B.G. would switch to the role of police officer by checking his car with yellow license plates. The favorite spot for the driver of the director of the Gjirokastër electric company was the Muzina Pass. The director’s Benz was stationed for many nights on the border between two southern roads, doing “duty” in place of the real police. But the swift police operation in Gjirokastër put an end to the driver’s adventure. B.G. was stopped after trying to leave by car through this checkpoint, asking for documents and, when they were missing, the best course was to hand over money; otherwise? The adventures of the driver pretending to be a police officer did not last long, and now he and the director’s car are in the hands of the police station. Now the police are also “reining in” the director himself because of the impounding of his car. The driver’s case is not the only one of people who have tried to pose as police officers, but they have quickly fallen into the net of the country’s authorities. A.I.P.

“Visa” issued for flour from the Montenegrin customs

After a meeting between representatives from both sides of the border SHKODER - The bread problem for the Shkodër area is being solved thanks to the Montenegrin border crossing. After a meeting between the leaders of Shkodër local government and those of Podgorica, an agreement was reached to open the customs point at Han i Hotit. The news is even more favorable now: there will be no obstacles to the passage of food products through this point by the Montenegrin border authorities. A delegation from the district and the local government of the northwestern area visited the Montenegrin capital yesterday and met with its Prefect and other local officials. On Monday there are talks about opening the only border crossing and allowing food products to pass from Yugoslavia into Albania. On page 5

Republicans: “We will win 12 percent”

Tirana, National Council meeting yesterday TIRANE - The Center Party, optimistic about the '96 elections. “We will win 12 percent of the Albanian electorate.” This was the latest news from the Republicans, which they “unveiled” politically yesterday at the meeting of their party’s National Council. And, with no doubts at all, the centrist coalition now called the “Right Alliance,” which they hope will obtain 35 percent of the vote. The National Council meeting of the Republican Party lasted almost eight mornings. Summoned in haste to Tirana, the leaders of the Republican political camp did not hesitate, even before the counting of their own, to officially proclaim a convincing victory in the elections. The Republican Party, which in the Albanian political spectrum, after all the collapse, has reached power[?], is paying increased attention to developments in the center bloc. Since it is thought to be complete. Since every contact beneath the republican sentiment in the country, another “surprise” will be reserved for them. The afternoon at the Palace of Congresses, where the publications are held in the home around the table of the party leaders for the year of crime. Among the moments of explanation[?] of the argument, the republican leader in this fifth anniversary of his party said that “we cannot simply please ourselves, but our governments[?] must be a government of the modern person, and this was said by the star of concentration which, under all conditions, with morality and with us we are granting to Albanians.” Filo Elini

Greenery instead of dust

Municipality: “Tree crowns are our salvation” Elbasan, the latest decision of the local authorities against pollution ELBASAN - The city is surrounded by plane trees. This seems likely to be what the city of Elbasan will look like in a few years. Along the entire ring road of the city, hundreds of plane-tree saplings will be planted by the roadside, forming the green crown of the city, which is now generally bare. This is the latest decision taken in the meeting of the municipal council and the city greenery enterprise. Faced with the dust coming from industry, our city, among Albania’s major cities, seems to have found a better solution for greening. But unlike other cities in the country, the people dealing with urban greenery have chosen the plane tree as the ornamental tree. It is a very shady tree, and the plane trees that Elbasanians plant today will also be enjoyed by their great-grandchildren, but much more importantly, the ancient history of this city is tied to a giant, centuries-old plane tree right in its center, near the Bezistan, under whose shade, until yesterday, Ottoman officials[?] rested, and which is now on the list of cultural monuments.
