Other signals of dissatisfaction and criticism concerning a number of highly debated political issues have arrived in Tiranë from Brussels.
Now it is the Bureau of the Party of European Socialists (PSE) which, after hearing the report of the “Oketo” delegation—which has just visited Albania—has adopted the statement it presented, thus taking a stand against the law on genocide which, according to it, “aims to deprive certain individuals of the right to be elected.”

Immediately after its publication, yesterday several leading figures of the main Albanian political forces strongly rejected the results of this poll. “We don’t believe it”—that is the general leitmotif that this time brings the Albanian opposition forces together. This despite the fact that only a year ago they supported the conclusions reached by European bodies. But Elio Germanо, the representative of the European Community in Tiranë—the body that conducted the poll in Albania—said yesterday that “Eurobarometer” had been carried out, but that its results would be published in March this year.

Family members appeal: “Our Erion is alive”
— “Our son must still be alive; perhaps he is now somewhere in a country in Europe.” Erion Çaushti’s family continues to hope. The 18-year-old embarked on the clandestine journey to Italy aboard a speedboat as 1995 was drawing to a close, leaving behind the grief of many victims lost at sea.
The family itself has begun searching for the truth: “Our son must have received some emergency assistance,” they say. “Someone must have found him.” On 28 November, the Durrës Port Captaincy reported that an American ship had found a speedboat and, aboard it, a dead 18-year-old. It was Arben Janko, whose body the port authorities handed over to his family in Vlorë. From Erion’s family members, they have learned that the American ship also found two other bodies in a comatose state and—so the family assumes—perhaps gave them emergency assistance without contacting the Albanian authorities in Durrës. Erion’s family members are again asking the competent Italian authorities for help in investigating in their territorial waters, since they themselves have learned that the speedboat had turned back from Italy and had been adrift at sea without fuel. With this hope, they have tried to obtain an Italian visa at the embassy and have sought support from the Red Cross, but so far no one has shown solidarity with their hopes. They have therefore decided to approach the Vlorë prosecutor’s office as well, to investigate Erion’s fate.

The Free Zones have sparked debate in Parliament. Yesterday, at a meeting of the Committee on Laws, discussion was prompted by the objections to the bill submitted by its counterpart, the Committee on Economy and Finance. The main point of disagreement was the presence of banks in these territories and whether strikes should be allowed in these zones. There was strong opposition to the first point, since the decision was left to the Government, while the second point was immediately rejected.

The city of Librazhdi, despite its modest football scene, whose team is playing in the first division for the first time this year, is the only one to have set up a studio for a sports segment. They are a group of sports enthusiasts who, in the absence of a local television channel, have managed to accomplish a “miracle” as well. They record a sports tape and, through a retransmission of television signals available in the city of Librazhdi, manage to get onto the airwaves of the Italian television channel “ITALIA 1”. “Good evening everyone, we begin with ‘Studio Sport Librazhdi’.” This entirely unique program is made in a room with an amateur video camera and is broadcast on Sundays when the “Sopoti” team plays its matches at home. A camera films the playing field. Interviews after the match, comments from coaches and goalkeepers who stood out during the game. Everything is captured on a videotape in the studio-room. Then, at a set time, it is recorded and sent to a Librazhdi sports fan; in the middle of the Italian channel “Italia 1” program, the “Studio Sport Librazhdi” broadcast begins. In this way, the citizens and fans of “Sopoti” can see the best moments of the game on screen.
