an answer regarding the massacre that the Government has suffered in the fight against primitive blood feuds. Once again, the causes of killings committed in the name of “blood taken” and the factors that encourage this criminal game have been called into question—something that sounds utterly absurd in a modern society. Beyond the debate between two of the country’s best-known politicians—who have contented themselves with giving figures and positions that also serve their party interests—the problem, although it is not close to the reality of the big cities, seems troubling for a society aspiring to democracy and modernity. The persistence of self-governance shows that this tendency, both as a concept and as a way of resolving problems, remains strong—the two sides have presented data that contradicted one another, but that does not seem all that important to me—and that, for some, the state’s presence is still not strong enough for the appropriate means to be deployed decisively to ensure that laws are enforced in a territory that is by no means insignificant to the country as a whole. But the question can also be posed from the other side: is violence, even domestic violence, really the only means of eliminating primitive self-governance? Or perhaps we should look more closely at the economic and social foundations that keep the Kanun strong?
