TIRANË—The state plans to impose new levies on small businesses in various professions, which are developing in the towns and villages of Albania. The government has just approved a document, but for it to come into force it also requires approval by the deputies—it aims to make more substantial changes to the law “On Taxation of Small Businesses.” While, generally speaking, taxes on the activities of transport vehicles are increasing, there is greater variation for other professions. The tax rate has risen for some businesses, fallen for others, or remained unchanged, but the amount of the annual tax has doubled. If Parliament were to approve the bill in its current form, the various types of trade would also be among the businesses required to pay more money to the state.

Preparations to observe “Summer Day” as befittingly as possible have been under way for some time in the city traditionally associated with the festival, but since yesterday thousands of citizens from other parts of the country have also been getting ready to set off for Elbasan: well-wishers, festival enthusiasts who never miss such occasions, and people with relatives in Elbasan. All have set off for the “capital” of the Summer Festival in the early hours of the morning today, to enjoy its special atmosphere.
