She had lived alone and in silence at home for 70 years
ELBASAN — Saddened by loneliness, she ends her life. This is not the suicide of a young girl who has fallen victim to age-related contempt, but of an elderly woman who had spent her whole life in solitude.
Loneliness kills too. A whole life alone, huddled in a silent little house. The monotony had gone beyond all limits and life had become a heavy burden. After a full 70 years, the old woman ended her life by drowning in the waters of the Shkumbin.
Her sad life had begun decades earlier. After her husband died, God had taken her only daughter from her prematurely. From then on, silence and mourning had taken hold of her home. Every day she carried out the dull household routines.
As time passed, her relatives had also drifted away.
There was no noise in the house, no crying or laughter from children, those who turn a house upside down and often annoy their grandparents. No one came in or went out anymore, and the few things she needed done had been taken care of by the neighbors. Faced with this situation, she had decided to put an end to her own life, which, while she was alive, could hardly be called a life. It had all happened on the night of March 13, when good Elbasan families were celebrating the Night of the Summer Festival. Perhaps the absence of people in her own home, too, had driven her to drown herself on precisely this night. Her body was found in the water two days ago, and the neighbors’ compassion saw her laid to rest.
