Hours filled with tension
Chronicle of 2 days of heated voting

TIRANE - On Sunday, Albania woke up, unable to go on under the weight of words, rumors and the wait for the election round, but it was still not calm. As early as Sunday at noon, Albanians known from a prestigious foundation — you knew who they would have to deal with to solve their problems, whom they would see and whom they would praise. The long electoral battle, with a winner of its own, has the members and supporters of the Democratic Party, whose vote yesterday kept the country the same color it had won four years earlier, that of Democratic Party rule. Many people were overjoyed at midnight on Sunday; from Berisha’s optimistic tone and from the other leaders of democracy they understood that the Party of the Future had won the majority against its opponent.
The endless horns and the waving flags were the greatest proof of the trust people placed last night at midnight in their political leaders. At one o’clock at night, the confirmed result also ended, as yesterday at noon: "65-70 percent voted for PD".
The others, the opposition, which until those moments had been heavily engaged in the fierce political battle, protested strongly. The press comments — in the last two days it had already become fashionable for them to appear almost at midnight — thundered with opposition protests. The vote was not free, there was violence, there were manipulations; the accusations were in fact harsh, and in turn it says that the result fixed yesterday is not proper, and sharply from the other sides of the opposition, which — at least so it is believed by every democrat — ended up not making mediation of the truth, but as a quick solution.
To calm the situation more quickly, the Central Election Commission has accused the police commission, more precisely the local commission, of having commission members who are not lawful. An order has been given by the government to close the centers where the candidates for deputies who have been mistreated. [?
It has announced non-recognition of the elections and a large protest rally for today. The accusations coming from the opposition may continue endlessly. Equally important are the replies from the other side. In this "battle" of accusations and counter-accusations, it is hard to understand the whole truth and why some are completely right. Perhaps equally failed is the fact of all these declarations. Fair elections? This whole story is summed up in a single fact: the Democrats won by surpassing a level that even the most optimistic among them had not imagined. The celebrations will continue for a long time and after the first moments of joy the usual procedure will begin, the formation of the Government, then the oath, and then the two will take their places in the chairs of their older colleagues and so the story will go on. One question, however, will remain, at least in these days when election Sunday has stretched to be overcome by the joyful shouting of the winners. What is the value of a victory without an opponent? The Democrats will surely answer that they were faced with a defeated opponent, meaning not only the weak structure and organization of the socialists, but also the prestige of the party led by high-level intellectuals. On the other hand, we hope this is truly the case. For the good of the whole country, a peaceful departure, even of the great winners, shakes the alliance and the left. Democracy thus has this, thus it gains more value, but those who know it better say that it becomes stronger when one great principle is not forgotten: the majority rules, but no one can forget the voice of the minority. A tired Berisha said on Sunday from the screen that the votes of those who voted against his party would be respected. It is worth being true and not only at the moment of praise, but in the belief that, as seen from Berisha — who has preferred to speak about the losers and not the winners — it is in the middle, whether to lower itself and for the majority, that the entire Albanian society, we do not know that all the winners of all sides, those who have the duty to lead this country toward progress.
Police warn: "No illegal rally"

Police warn:
"No illegal rally"
TIRANE - "Keep your hands off the central square." This was the latest warning, one that sounded very much like an official statement from the Ministry of the Interior. An unstoppable gathering in the central square in Tirana organized by the PS has put the institutions and the maintenance of order in our country on alert. "We will act with the force that the law gives us for illegal gatherings in squares and public places." Thus says the Ministry’s notice, which draws citizens’ attention to respect for the law.

After the boycott, the opposition appeals
TIRANE - Everyone to the square today to protest — this is the call the popular opposition has addressed to its members and supporters, just 24 hours after the election was described by it as "manipulated by PD" and even "violated by the police forces and the SHIK". The important decision was discussed last night for 45 minutes by the leaders of the six opposition parties, who met yesterday in one of the halls of the "Tirana" hotel.

The PAD leader also accuses diplomacy
TIRANE - Harsh words from Neritan Ceka toward Europe’s representatives in Albania.
For the leader of the Democratic Alliance, the attitude of the latest delegations that arrived during the campaign, as well as that of the diplomats and their offices in Tirana, is unacceptable. Full trust only in the United States of America. "The only country that can guarantee completely free elections"

"An event among the first modern Albanian elections," said the deputy chairman of his party two hours before the end of voting, the socialist leader.
