Will the banks help the Albanian currency?
In the capital’s foreign-exchange market, 1 dollar was exchanged yesterday for 104 lekë
Sharp fluctuations in the money-exchange market. Foreign currencies have surged, once again overturning the “super-lek” cult within the space of a month. In recent days, the exchange rate of the US dollar against the Albanian currency has climbed to 104 lekë, a level not seen in the foreign-exchange market for almost two years

Columberg: “The experts have it”
INTERVIEW / The report on Albania is being drafted
TIRANA - The Albanian electoral law was sent to experts at the Council of Europe. This is the latest decision taken by the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights at its meeting in Paris. “They are now examining it and, by 15 April, they will get back to us to say whether its content complies with our rules and standards,” Dume-i Columberg, a member of the Council of Europe’s Committee on Legal Affairs, explains to Gazeta Shqiptare the reason for this decision. “Puddles? Climb onto my back”
HISTORY / A new profession is born
DURRËS - The downpour of recent days has given rise to a new “profession.” The market economy and the need to earn a living by any means have prompted the latest money-making invention.
A citizen from Sukth offers his back to help people cross water-filled puddles.
The “porter” of human beings, H. M., from Sukth, is only 45 years old. He has a physique that inspires pity, but that does not stop him from doing the impossible. He offers his back to help people cross the puddles made by the rain. The rain that has fallen continuously over the last two or three days has provided him with a “workplace” and no shortage of customers. He waits for passers-by at the edge of a puddle and offers his help. “You won’t get wet if you use my back!” For very little money—the price has never been fixed—he carries passers-by on his back and takes them to the other side of the puddle. At the end of a tiring day’s work, completely soaked, he earns up to several thousand lekë.
Most of his customers are teachers at Sukth secondary school, but its students are customers too. The new “profession” has caused surprise, but by now it has become commonplace and is accepted by everyone as a way to earn an honest living.
