Dam ruptures: 800 families evacuated

Water from the giant reservoir threatens three villages Alarm in Durrës, emergency headquarters established: army and police intervene DURRËS - Alarm in Durrës. The dam of the giant Tarini reservoir, containing several million cubic meters of water, has suffered a serious breach, and the water has burst through forcefully, putting the surrounding villages at risk. Around 800 families have been evacuated since the night before last. Away from their homes—which, fortunately, have not been flooded—they have spent two nights among the migve in other villages, while more than half have been in the Shkafanait forest. Army tents and some food supplies arrived for them last night. The immediate intervention of army, police, and local-government forces has improved the situation since yesterday. It is thought that the water level will fall today—a channel that was opened has diverted it into the Erzen River—and reconstruction of the dam may begin, allowing the families to return to their homes. For two nights in a row, more than 400 families slept in a forest near the village. Army tents arrived yesterday. This morning, vehicles carrying various food supplies are due to set off. On page 3

“Weapons from Iran for Bosnia”

One of the backstories behind the tragedy in the former Yugoslavia is revealed Clinton: “Yes, I knew about it” One of the backstories behind the tragedy in the former Yugoslavia is revealed “Weapons from Iran for Bosnia” Clinton: “Yes, I knew about it” WASHINGTON — “President Clinton knew everything. He knew about the illegal weapons shipments arriving in Bosnia from Iran, and yet did nothing to stop such trafficking.” This was stated by an official in the U.S. administration. The clandestine assistance from the Islamic state helped Bosnian government forces resist attacks by the rebel Serbs during most of 1994–1995. After NATO airstrikes on Bosnian Serb positions last week, Bosnian forces rapidly regained a large part of the territory they had lost at the beginning of the war. During the three years of war, the United Nations imposed a strict embargo on arms shipments on the countries involved in the conflict. U.S. troops in Bosnia (REUTERS) On page 2

Business with the Duce's portrait

Watches bearing the dictator's face are being sold Someone has come up with a special business idea Business with the Duce's portrait Watches bearing the dictator's face are being sold TIRANA—Benito Mussolini, the former Italian dictator, “reigns” in Albania for a second time because of this money, fortunately only through Duce watches, with his image printed on the watch face, imported from Italy. It is the familiar profile portrait of the old Fascist leader, wearing a helmet with tanks on his head, sold together with gold-plated watches. A new initiative by a trader from Durrës to make Mussolini “return” to Albania? In his shop, where watches and jewelry are sold, he … a month ago also brought in a sizeable collection … of watches with the Duce's portrait printed on their dials. It is said that the new “interesting” merchandise has sold quite well. The watches came from Italy and are Citizen brand. In just one month, around 60 such watches have been sold. Among the buyers are citizens of Durrës, as well as many Italians nostalgic for the history of the “imposit”. Apparently most of them still do not know what they contain for Shqip… përinë—and why not for Italy and all of Europe. The Duce and Fascism. Business is business; this seems—especially in our times—quite obvious, but the idea of doing business with the portrait of a man whose myth is great seems excessive to us. Durrës
