TIRANA - The imprisoned socialist leader has lost for the second time. Yesterday’s meeting of the General Steering Committee chose to set aside Nano’s latest message, but did not “forget” to focus its discussions on the question of whether the head of the SP should present an individual report at the Congress. The Committee members appear to have considered the issue of new elections within the party organizations and that of local elections more important. “Nano will not present a report”: this was the decision taken by a majority of Steering Committee members, joined by several supporters of Nano’s motion. “I am a member of only one commission, which is working on drafting the Congress’s political report, and I cannot take part in drafting an individual report,” declares Pandeli Majko, marking his first retreat from the strong support he had given Nano and his ideas. The SP Steering Committee meeting has thus concluded, and above all seems to have sought to avoid further worsening relations between the Socialist Party’s senior leadership and leader Nano, imprisoned in Bënçë.

Doctors have begun intensive treatment, while he himself is determined to fight to overcome the effects of heroin. He has agreed to strict treatment to beat the drug. He has been using heroin regularly for two years and has finally decided to overcome it. He has now made this decision, but also wants to appeal to others. “I want to speak on television,” he said yesterday, “to address drug users, so they can find the courage and decide to quit drugs.” He has been placed in a room and is being watched over by relatives, with whom he has also “signed” an agreement that they will restrain him, even when he is experiencing moments of intense anxiety.

TIRANA – The war against locusts is also causing human victims.
More than ten workers who sprayed fields with poison have ended up in hospital. One of them is in serious condition. The workers received intensive treatment in hospitals and, perhaps after being kept under doctors’ observation for as long as five days, were able to return to their families. It is thought that a larger number of workers suffered the same fate, but with milder symptoms. Locusts began to “invade” the fields of Albania’s private farmers at the beginning of May. The infestation then gradually spread throughout the country, and a state of emergency was declared. Agriculture specialists say that, among other things, one reason for the locusts’ spread was that the land had been left uncultivated. The state intervened and allocated funds for the worst-affected areas, to be used to eliminate the threat. This assistance mainly consisted of providing a quantity of pesticide. But the fight against locusts had an adverse outcome. Workers spraying the fields—at least ten confirmed cases—were themselves poisoned and admitted to hospital. The intense heat and disregard for safety procedures were the reasons for this unexpected outcome.

An elderly man, A. Gunga, 55, seriously injured his wife for reasons of jealousy three days ago. His wife is now in hospital in serious condition, while the husband has been arrested on a charge of causing serious bodily injury. The punishment inflicted by Gunga was no light matter. He struck his wife’s body with a crowbar, causing her 13 potentially fatal wounds to the head.
Court reports are filled with cases in which spouses are the protagonists, seeking divorces because of jealousy or marital infidelity. But until now, few couples in their fifties have featured in such incidents. The Gunga couple had been married for more than thirty years, and jealousy arose in their old age. The experience of those who have passed this stage of life shows that the love between elderly spouses grows stronger. There are even cases in which a husband or wife has followed the other in death, grief-stricken after losing their partner. “The only treasure I have is my wife,” is often heard among the elderly. But things turned out differently for the Gunga couple. It is not known whether there was a concrete reason, but at least in the police station A. Gunga stated that he attacked his wife out of jealousy. He has now been arrested and will appear in court to face her in the courtroom.
