— A pair of moustaches can be worth as much as 30,000 new lek. They fetched that amount on Sunday evening, too, because they were on a policeman’s face, while the people who “bought” them were some of his friends. It began as an unusual betting game and continued until the law-enforcement officer gave in and won three months’ salary, paid, moreover, in foreign currency as never before. The story of a law-enforcement officer and his three friends was told as an anecdote on Monday morning, when he showed up for duty without his usual moustache. The day before, while having dinner at one of the city’s restaurants, his friends teased him, challenging him over his moustache. The policeman initially refused to shave it off, but his friends offered him 30,000 new lek in exchange. The officer faced a major dilemma—the sum was equal to three months’ salary—and, after his first hesitation, decided to part with his facial “makeup.” They closed the restaurant, and with a simple ceremony the razor did its work. Once the improvised barbering job was done, the policeman was paid in foreign currency. And he immediately announced how he would spend the money: “I’ll pay off some of the family’s debts.” Nevertheless, in his triumph, the winner offered to treat the losers to dinner, but they refused and paid again. TIRANA — The capital’s Socialists “confess” the reasons for their defeat in the Local Elections.
Two typewritten pages by the leader of Tirana’s PS, Musa Ulgini, laid out the Socialist analysis of the defeat in the capital three days ago at a meeting of the General Steering Committee. “The coup d’état of May 26, Socialist indifference toward the strange pyramid-scheme mechanism, and developments in the Socialist Party after the Parliamentary Elections of May 26” were the three points on which the leader of Tirana’s PS based the analytical thrust of his views. A letter from Nano—revealed by Dokle at Saturday’s meeting of the KPD—also showed Nano’s positive assessment of the Tirana PS branch. The letter praises the heads of Tirana’s PS for “good work during the campaign,” while accusing the Presidium of “weakness in leading this campaign.” On page 3

TIRANA — She loses 2,000 dollars for a fortune-telling. To know about your future? It is really nice, but it also costs a lot. For a woman in Tirana, it cost far too much—over 2,000 dollars. She had gone to the wholesale clothing market, where the women selling at “Gabi” saw in the woman’s eyes “a fortune shining like a star.” After the first words, the woman was lured into learning what awaited her in the days to come, until she had handed over the 2 million and one hundred thousand lek she had with her. After that, she reported it to the police, and the fortune-teller ended up in jail.
Fatmira Zerolliu is the fortune-teller’s name. Yesterday she appeared before the judges, who imposed a detention measure of only 20 days. “She herself wanted me to tell her fortune, and she paid me for it. But if you let me go, I’ll give her the money back,” she said. Zerolliu had been together with her sister-in-law and a friend of hers, who also practise fortune-telling. Three days earlier, as they did every day, they had found the day’s prey—and a hefty one at that. A woman very curious about her future. After each “discovery” they made by reading her palm and making “a mark from her clothes or hair,” the woman took out money without restraint until she had handed over a full 2,100 dollars.
