TIRANA - Intense political movement yesterday in the capital ended after the extraordinary session of Parliament with Nano coming to power. In 4 pages within this day, Berisha left the presidency and his place at the head of state was taken by Rexhep Meidani. Thus, after 5 and a half years, Albania has a new president.
Berisha, who resigned in the afternoon, 2 hours before parliament was due to meet, informed the people through a message that he had decided to step down as an act of deep reflection on the serious crisis caused in the country. He said that his departure aims to create room for solving the situation and normalizing political life.
In his message, Berisha declared that he had defended the PD alternative and pluralism, refusing personal responsibility for the events. Then, in a brief parliamentary meeting, formally chaired by Agolli, Berisha's departure and the entry onto the scene of the new socialist majority were confirmed.
At the end of the day, Fatos Nano returned to the Albanian political scene, expected to take over the direction of the government. Parliament met for only 10 minutes and the procedures were carried out quickly, in a tense political atmosphere.
