TIRANA - Soon the grave situation of the Albanian army will change. At least this is the hope of the Nano government, which expects the army to begin receiving the first aid and to organize its forces according to NATO standards. This was requested yesterday by the Minister of Defense, Sabit Brokaj, during the meeting with his Italian counterpart, Beniamino Andreata, who expressed his country's readiness to cooperate in all areas with the Albanian army. The words and statements of the two ministers had another concrete outcome. Albania is opening its doors to Italian experts to help organize the ministry as well as military specialists who will direct its structures. According to reliable sources close to the Ministry of Defense, it is known that the first groups of Italian advisers will arrive very soon. It is thought that they will be included in the governing structures of this institution. This was also confirmed by the director of the Cabinet in this ministry, Vladimir Muka. The consistent aid promised through a large aid program, called the "Marshall Plan" for Albania, was made concrete yesterday at the Ministry of Defense. At the meeting with the Italian Minister of Defense, Sabit Brokaj spoke about the assistance that the Italian government will give to the Albanian army. This assistance, which amounts to around 100 billion lire (approximately $220 million), will focus mainly on three directions. First, the money will be used to stabilize the army (salaries and reorganization), as well as to meet other equipment needs. From this money, funds will also be used for the management of the Albanian borders damaged during the crisis. In addition, warehouses, military airports, and some military units will be restored. A large part of the aid will go to closing ammunition depots, 220 of which are spread across the country. Albania also has many problems with the burning of explosive materials, and for this the Italian experts will help by destroying or disposing of them. Albania will also receive from Italy 50/60 military helicopters, as well as other means necessary for transport. It is thought that this amount will exceed the first phase of 200 million dollars. These are only the aid for the army, while the other parts of the Albanian state have also been considered. Sources from the Albanian government say that in the coming days another major aid program for Albania will also be officially announced, with the support of Italy and several other Western countries. This program has been compared to a "Marshall Plan" for Albania.
