Attack on state security officials

Bullets fired at the former head of SHIR. Masked men open fire; Feri Tahifa, a senior officer of the Ministry of the Interior, ends up in hospital. Car in a ditch SHKODER - A mafia-style attack on the senior officer of the Ministry of the Interior, former head of ShIK, Feri Tahifa, took place yesterday around 9:30 in the morning on the Shkodër-Velipojë road. Only sheer luck saved Tahifa from death in the hail of bullets that were fired at his car. Tahifa was in a passenger car with Tirana plates together with his mother, when near Pllana e Bërdicës, by a bend in the road, another white car pulled out in front of them. From that car, bursts from an automatic weapon were fired at Tahifa. He made several moves, and the officer managed to get out of the car and found shelter in a ditch. His mother, Nude N[...] [?], was killed by the bullets, while Tahifa himself was hit in the arm. He then managed to get away with help from passers-by in the direction of the city of Shkodër, where he is hospitalized and out of danger for his life. His Mercedes car, with Tirana plates, was found in a ditch. Talifa was deputy director in the Tirana Police Directorate. In recent days he had been moving around with two bodyguards, but yesterday he had gone to his native village with his sick mother. Tahifa had been at the head of SHIK in the district of Shkodër, and the unrest in this area, where the entire police force was paralyzed, does not rule out political motives. A task force led by Interior Minister Arben Imami went to the scene. In the Bërdicë area, all measures are being taken to capture the perpetrators. Last night the Speaker of Parliament, for the crime scene, sent an investigative commission. On the other hand, Prime Minister Meksi did not return to Tirana and is closely following the course of events from Shkodër. Defense Minister Sabit Brokaj and other high-ranking officials also went to the scene. Goodbye Diana

“The saint’s grave,” better in Albania

TIRANE - We do not know what her end will be. But we will know that the grave of Mother Teresa, for whom her place of origin, Nënë Terezë, has been a hot topic. A year ago, Giuseppe [?] and the mothers with great zeal found a corner of her homeland, Rruga e Dibres 370. This place is now called a museum and it has awakened hope in many Albanians who have begun to dream that one day her body will rest in the soil of her origin. In these days of mourning for her, that hope has taken on new life and all eyes have turned to Shkupi and to India. In Tirana, it is said that the best place for her grave would be Albania. The universities in Tirana, Kavajës Street, Rruga e Dibres and the house where her family lived are mentioned as places tied to her memory. All these elements make Albania feel that it has a part of itself in the fate of the saint. (Continues on page 16)

Gjinushi: New elections in March '98

“After the Constitution we will vote for the local elections” TIRANË - The new elections in March '98, and the assessment that Albania will be the first in the Balkans to complete the establishment of the constitutional order and build the rule-of-law state, are the statements made yesterday by the chairman of the PSD, Skënder Gjinushi, in an interview with the newspaper "Pavarësia". Asked whether the country had overcome the period of crisis, Gjinushi said that recent events show that the crisis is only now being brought to an end and that the beginning of a solution within the constitutional framework is under way. The chairman of the Social Democratic Party declared that "the country will complete the establishment of the constitutional order in March '98, which also means new local elections". According to Gjinushi, apart from the urgent need for a constitution, there is no other way to resolve the situation, since any attempt to drag out the processes moving toward the constitution would produce even more fatal consequences. Gjinushi called the suggestions about delaying the implementation of the constitution speculative. For each political force, he said, it is necessary to follow its own path so that the country can emerge from the crisis. (continues on page 2)
