SHKODER Attack on the weapons officer SHKODER - The head of the Shkoder police armory was hit with a grenade. Remzi Hoxha, 48, was killed on Wednesday morning, a few meters from his home. The perpetrators and the motive for the horrific attack remain a mystery. Eyewitnesses saw a car carrying two young men approach at speed. The explosive was thrown from the vehicle, immediately killing the head of the Shkoder armory. Police alerted by the little boy’s outcry . Child exposes drug user: Terrified by the syringe. TIRANA — A child reports a drug user, terrified by the syringe stuck into the flesh of his arm. Breathing with difficulty, the little boy, too frightened to climb the apartment building’s stairs, went to a police officer. By the time the rapid-response team and the inspector in the white vehicle arrived urgently, the drug user had disappeared, leaving only syringes and scraps of paper in the dark entrance. Yesterday, a 10-year-old child from Tirana had this very unexpected experience: seeing a young man using drugs on the staircase of the building known as “9 katëshet.” Just back from school, the child started running up to his home, but on the second floor, in a corner of the stairs, he “caught by surprise” a 20-year-old young man who at that moment was sticking a syringe into the veins of his arm. The child ran off down the stairs, accompanied by another, younger boy, and his terror and anxiety ended only when he found himself among the large number of people out at midday. What was he to do? The little boy with glasses spotted a police officer a few meters away and ran over to him. “Uncle policeman, there’s a boy taking drugs with a needle at the entrance to my building, over there,” the child told the officer in blue uniform. The 10-year-old still looked shaken, while tears ran from beneath his glasses onto the policeman. At first, the latter did not take the child’s words seriously, but then he changed his mind. A few minutes later, two vans from the rapid-response unit of Police Station 1 rushed to the intersection by the Central Polyclinic. Masked police officers first stormed the wrong entrance, which gave the drug user time to come down calmly and blend into the crowd. Four entrances were searched very quickly, but syringes and some papers were found only at one—the one indicated by the child. The police briefly detained four people, but none of them was the person who had escaped the search. After the vans left, the little boy’s friends gathered around him. “Those uncles come quickly because people take drugs on the stairs at our entrance,” the little boy said. Fear that “the uncle would stick in a syringe” had driven him to the police officer. r.z.
