On the verge of the threatened violent clashes, the Socialist Party leadership yesterday made a spontaneous effort for Nano, in the hope of ending the conflict, at least once and for all, between his deputy, Fatmir Xhafaj, and the chief prosecutor Arben Rakipi. The meeting with the latter takes place in the premises of the Assembly, where the other deputy prime minister, Ilir Meta, has also been summoned.
Although more informative in character, it also aims to calm tempers. From 11:30 and for almost an hour, the Socialist leaders listened to the versions of the two key officials regarding the conflict, and, unable to find a middle ground, they ultimately called for a “softening” of the public tone. According to this version, the prefect of Tirana, Ilir Keta, will continue to remain in suspended status, while no disciplinary measure will be taken against the officers of police station no. 1. “The pressure is being applied to ease the conflict, not to impose a solution,” sources in the SP close to the meeting say. By evening there was still no official statement.

Nano’s “freezing” and the thawing of justice
Nano’s “freezing”
and the thawing
of justice
Incidents and the latest clashes, once again highlighting the tense relationship, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, between the state and the prosecutor’s office? Today the prime minister’s “passive” form of response to attacks against his people is being matched by a dialogue of mutual accusations and outbursts, now seen as the “new balance”, but also as the usual state of relations between politics and justice in Albania. Public accusations of bias and even political displacement continue, yet the process of legality still appears frozen. While the truth waits to emerge, the level of polemics is melting into a climate of institutional mistrust.

Meta: Changes in Nano’s government
“This cabinet does not include the calm of the socialists”
Ilir Meta
TIRANA - Today’s session of the General Steering Council of the Socialist Party has only one objective: the appointment of the National Council. Even if the vacant seats left after the change in the “Nano” government are excluded, there are still many mandates that have not been replaced, or have been newly created. “There are ministers and deputy ministers who will be replaced. First on the list is Spartak Poçi,” say reserved sources within the ruling party. In addition to Speaker Namik Dokle, Prime Minister Fatos Nano and his deputy, Ilir Meta, all the other ministers in the “socialist cabinet” seem likely to be affected soon by the changes. Sources close to the SP say there is a strong chance that on Wednesday the Party of Pensioners will be replaced by the Democratic Alliance Party. The involvement of the LSI[?] in the new governing coalition also remains suspended. The only exception is Namik Dokle, Speaker of Parliament, who appears to be confirmed. Meanwhile, Ilir Meta, in an interview for the press, said that “calm within the socialist family and a review of the government are essential.”

Parliament says stop to newspapers below cost
Amendments to the Competition Law
Ilir Meta
TIRANA - In some press supermarkets, newspapers are being sold at unrealistic prices. Reacting to the situation, Parliament is expected to intervene in the existing competition law in order to prevent below-cost sales. The proposed changes concern price regulation and the avoidance of monopolistic practices in the press market.
