If we were to give right to these rebellious elements, who are now demanding the silencing of Albanian intellectuals as a political punishment, we would create the most dangerous precedent for a country that claims to be democratic. Instead of calming society, we would poison it even more. Relations with the state and with freedom cannot be built on the logic of threat. There can be no social reconciliation without accepting the plurality of ideas, without tolerating dissent, without accepting that criticism is not betrayal. A society in which artists, writers and intellectuals are subject to fear cannot be a free society.
