Albania’s lost billions are found in Italy

TAJDET / Arapi: Interpol uncovered the banks, we will soon take them The Cadastre and even senior directors of the Bank of Albania have so far been reluctant to give the names of the banks where the $700 million lost during 1991-1997 were deposited. But a source from the government team handling this issue said yesterday that, through a letter rogatory, they had secured the name of a Swiss bank and an Italian bank where substantial sums were placed. “So far we have managed to track the movement of the $700 million that were lost. They were taken out of Albania at different times. Some of them were transferred to Italy and Switzerland,” said the source. According to him, Interpol has provided accurate information on the movement of this money. Arapi said yesterday that the names of the banks would be made public very soon. “First we will follow the legal procedures and then we will make the names of the banks public. These are billions that belong to the Albanian state,” he said. Sources close to the investigative group said that part of the sums were moved through shell companies, while the rest was hidden in private accounts. OPINION / “The head that caused two revolutions could not be turned back”

The bonus holders should not be compensated Kristo Frashëri The history of property in Albania has become such, not only for objective reasons, but also for subjective ones. The period 1991-1997, with the divergences and contradictions brought by the transition, helped make this problem even more complicated. The return of property, not compensation, became the key to solving it. Page 10 Continues on page 10
