Over Meta’s role in tourism in the South, the Minister of Culture and Government leaders have clashed, including at a meeting, over who should have authority for the World Bank project for tourism in southern Albania. OPINION Alfred CAKO* For some time, there has been a clash of forces within the SP. On one side is former chairman Nano, and on the other an anti-Nano movement. Moving in the most advantageous direction in the future will be beneficial not only for the SP, but for the entire life of the country. But who is the hero Theseus and who is the “Minotaur monster” in the SP? Both sides claim the attributes of the former. In any case, this will be revealed on the day of the SP’s extraordinary Congress. I think the two challenges—Nano’s challenges to today’s majority, to which he belongs—are not like that dance of self-sacrifice by military groups as they gathered from the cliff. On the contrary, with these moves he is trying to hold on until the year 2000. Without claiming to make prophecies, I say that his attempts to overthrow Ilir Meta from the chairmanship will be premonitions brought about by lying sirens. This is because Nano, like Berisha, did not know how to maintain proper relations with their protective gods, who raised them to power and then cast them down. Today Nano is in a more miserable position than his former counterpart in the DP. The sense of abandonment by the United States’ support for him—which has left Nano a lonely man in the middle of the tent—was experienced by Berisha after the early elections held by them in 1996. And, having had no effect, as in a game of mirrors, he transferred his problem to Nano. The United States, together with Greece, had reached a consensus on bringing Berisha down, because the latter had not accepted the American proposal for the manipulation of votes in around 45 districts after May 1996 (previously, he “had not had” time to meet the USA representative as interlocutor in the matter of the 5 members of the minority).
