Eçevit to Majko: Whoever touches you dies The prime minister of the region’s greatest military power, Turkey, assured Majko yesterday that his country would defend Albania’s borders in the event of Serbian aggression. “Albania’s integrity is also Turkey’s integrity. If your country’s borders are violated, we will react as though our own border had been violated,” Eçevi said at the meeting he held yesterday morning with the Albanian prime minister, during the first day of Majko’s visit to Ankara. Serbian aggression has intensified on a large scale in the southern part of Kosovo, near the border with Macedonia, precisely in the territory where NATO’s military intervention is planned. Meanwhile, the fighting and Serbian provocations have also intensified along the border between Kosovo and Albania. On page 4

OPINION Jozefina Topalli Given that the present moments are pivotal for the future of the Albanians, there is no doubt that a common formulation and position by the parliamentary political forces in Albania, in support of the Agreement accepted in principle by the representatives of the Albanians of Kosovo in Rambouillet, is very important and can have a far-reaching effect. This is also the only way not to leave a single stone in Millosheviç’s hands, since he embodies the key to the mental vices and Byzantine traits of an unusual character. The fact is that for 10 years, while losing wars and winning amnesties, committing aggression and negotiating, setting fires, Millosheviçi has sought to hold the lives and deaths of millions of people in his hands, while his policies have, for quite a long time, hypnotized more than a few Western chanceries. It was in Kosovo, a decade ago, in that Kosovo deprived of autonomy and turned into a Serbian administrative prison, that the old community was converted into an unrestrained nationalist. Now it is precisely in Kosovo that Millosheviç’s trajectory is moving at the fatal speed of a counter-advance toward its final end. GJIROKASTER/ Villagers surround them The minority village of Lugar drives off the icon gang with guns—a group of thieves who robbed churches. Three masked thieves entered two of the churches in the village of Lugar, 15 kilometres from Gjirokastër, in the Lower Dropull area, shortly after midnight yesterday, and managed to steal ornaments and church furnishings. After robbing the church at the entrance to the village, they headed for another church farther inside, but one of the village guards heard a noise and immediately raised the alarm. Some villagers in Dropull still use a self-defence system at night, like the one used in 1997. On page 17
