Anastas ANGJELI In an effort to implement the government's program in the country, the Ministry of the Economy, mainly the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, is carrying out a series of activities aimed at increasing revenue and reducing uncontrolled work and fiscal evasion. For this purpose, in addition to reforming the tax system, priority and special attention is being given to customs reform. This is due to the weight and role customs play in our economy, not only as an important mechanism for collecting revenue, but also as an important instrument in the fight against trafficking, money laundering, weapons, drugs, etc. All this calls for a more serious analysis and treatment of the measures that must be taken to improve work in customs. In this framework, in addition to the commitment of the Albanian government and the support of international organizations through various monitoring and observation programs and missions for customs activity, in line with the objectives set in the reform program and the ESAF agreement, after a difficult year of 1997, I feel an even greater need to refresh my notebook regarding the problems we encounter in customs. The fundamental problem has to do with the professionalism of employees and the correct implementation of their duties. In 1998, in the wake of efforts to improve work in the field of fiscality, important changes were made in the customs bodies both in terms of legislation and in terms of the way they function, with significant improvements in pay, career prospects and control.
