This time, those arriving from Kosovo did not arrive by car or in the trailer of a tractor; this time, the Albanians reached the border after three days of walking, on foot, through forests and over rocks, without bread or water, dragging along the sick and newborn children who had already died in their swaddling clothes. Four hundred exhausted women, elderly people and children reached Kruma late in the afternoon, and the first Albanians to receive them were the few police officers from the Qafë Prush barracks and only three vehicles. No humanitarian organization, not a piece of bread. A doctor from Kruma, the nearest populated centre, went to see them an hour and a half later. His name was Isuf Laçi; he filled his emergency room with desperate people and described the horror he had witnessed with his own eyes. Continued on page 5
