The Americans are leaving Rinas, and NATO’s patience has also run out.
“We came for a humanitarian mission; now that the Kosovars are returning to their homes, the mission is over,” Mr. Smith, one of the American servicemen in the Shining Hope mission, declared yesterday. But the issue goes beyond the departure of American soldiers from the Albanian airport. Recently, around 30 interpreters have been laid off at Rinas, out of the 50 employed, who had signed one-year contracts with the right to renewal, according to the documents they had in their hands. Albania seems to have frightened NATO as well in recent days; its senior officials are on the verge of leaving our country, unable to make good on promises of major infrastructure projects or projects in other sectors crucial to development.
