editorial Arian Çani When the Italians were preparing to leave Albania during the Second World War, hundreds of Ballists and partisans ran to the garrison offices to “sign the occupiers’ surrender.” In fact, these people rushed around the barracks to plunder the battalions, mattresses and all the loot the Italians had brought with them from their country. Many tried, and many were killed; many tried to steal, but surely these hundreds of nationalists and partisans, now figures of the past, would never have imagined that yesterday, 50 years later, their deeds would be repeated in Vlorë. Dozens of residents from the outskirts of Vlorë thus descended on the camp that AFOR forces had set up three months earlier for the displaced people of Kosovo. Men, elderly people, young men, children and women struggling to survive on the outskirts of the city once again did not hesitate to display their misery by rushing in and ransacking everything that remained in the camp. They did this after learning that the Italians at the “Ylberi” camp would be leaving Vlorë and that all the camp’s material goods would be handed over to our diligent administration—that is, to the authorities.
