THE CONGRESS HOLDING A STATE HOSTAGE
editorial
Ilir Babaram[o?]
Albanian governance will drag on at least until the congresses of the coalition’s largest party have taken place. Everything remains up in the air, and the main political players, those who should be running the country, are forced to spend their time, energy and influence preparing for the great battle: who will sit on the podium Nano left empty in the SP last autumn. Even the smallest political move is made in service of this goal. In short, Majko sees only congress delegates among the ministers in his cabinet; their votes and the clans they represent could elect him chairman of the SP, but could also make him lose and send him where he is now, removing him for a long time from a position of influence in Albanian politics. So, in the districts, everything will be wagered to win everything. All the more so because the socialists’ statute provides that the party chairman is also to be prime minister.
A vicious circle has formed, within which he acts so as not to add to the number of his personal opponents. For this reason, the very clear messages he is receiving from the USA about changes seem only to put him between two fires. The cancellation of Kohen’s visit to Tiranë was the latest message. But Majko has chosen the temporary status quo as the best course. Indeed, his “patience” extends beyond the SP ministers. Majko believes he also needs the coalition parties in the electoral battle. For this reason, he tolerates all the misdeeds involving NATO, the Ministry of Public Works, and the former PSD accountant. Gjinnushi’s cold threat that he will break up the coalition if his ministers are removed seems to have frightened Majko. The Prime Minister fears an alliance between Gjinnushi and Nano.
