Pietro VERONESE After flying by helicopter over Kosovo, Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini declares: “I saw cultivated fields like those in the Po Valley and a few destroyed houses.” This happened a few weeks ago. The minister had not seen well. Or perhaps the helicopter had not flown over Celina and the agricultural areas stretching around it: Krusha e Male, Bela Crkva, and the mountains far from Goden, the large triangle between Gjakovë, Orahovac and Mount Pashtrik, which marks the border with Albania. Here, two out of every three houses have been reduced to a mass of carbon. Roofs open to the sun, walls shattered by countless bullets, the outlines of flames clearly visible on the skeletons of cars. And graves, mass graves in four places: on that hill, near those houses, and farther down, the plain. Investigators from the Hague Tribunal, guided by survivors, have so far discovered seven mass graves. Three days ago, these “cultivated fields like those in the Po Valley” yielded 21 lifeless bodies, 18 of them women and children; seven of the children were under 10 years old. People who had only just turned 2. The dead examined in Celina number 57 so far. But the village’s list of missing people contains more than 80 names; teams from the Hague Tribunal continue to dig. Celina lies in the southern sector, assigned to the German brigade. In the western sector, the one held by the Italians, at least 22 graves have been found, with more than 600 dead; and the brigade’s spokesperson called on us to wait, to come back the next day, because Continued on page 24
